I don't know about the pay being THAT good.
A Col maxes out at $10,187/Month (before taxes) but needs 26 years of mil service to get to that pay level. Many government mid-level managers make more than that with virtually NO real responsibility.
Is that good pay? I guess it depends on one's current pay. BUt if you join the army, you will be living below the current US poverty level for at least several years. If you are commissioned out of ROTC or one of the academies or OCS (don't know if OCS is still active) then you at least start at at 42K/year - in the salary range of a Pizza Hut restaurant manager...
Nothing against Pizza Hut managers but a rifle platoon leader has a whole lot more to deal with...
