Off topic but, what's the census and feelings towards the Wall St protesters, I see they are coming to Vancouver and OB seems to tacitly support them ?

"It's a job. The military now serves the desire of oligarchs not country . Pay is pretty damn good.
"

I don't know about the pay being THAT good. Adjusted for inflation it's about the same as it was when I left the Army in 1973. I was an O-3 (captain). Corrected for inflation, the pay when I left the US army in 1973 had the almost identical buying power of the salary of a CPT today with the same level of service.

Looking at the current military pay tables, the same would be true through any of the EM/NCO/officer ranks compared to then.

Currently an Army First Sergeant maxes out at $5400/month (gross pay before taxes)

A Col maxes out at $10,187/Month (before taxes) but needs 26 years of mil service to get to that pay level. Many government mid-level managers make more than that with virtually NO real responsibility.

Is that good pay? I guess it depends on one's current pay. BUt if you join the army, you will be living below the current US poverty level for at least several years. If you are commissioned out of ROTC or one of the academies or OCS (don't know if OCS is still active) then you at least start at at 42K/year - in the salary range of a Pizza Hut restaurant manager... ;)

Nothing against Pizza Hut managers but a rifle platoon leader has a whole lot more to deal with...

Dennis,
Trying to relate your post to the thread.
Which is a greater threat to the well being of this country?
Encouraging the obstruction of regular business activites within the financial center of the country,
or
Piracy over 8,000 miles from our shore.

Don't you mean "Piracy against American Vessels in the course or doing legitimate business outside our borders"?

Charity begins at home, look after your own problems before trying to fix someone else's specially those 8k mile away. If you bring "home" the foreign Governments lack of ability to secure free travel for your Citizens, there are many avenues available to avoid those issues, common sense being the first.

The disruption of our financial system at home would be a natural priority considering 40 million unemployed, the sad part is that the Government fails to to educate the populace as to the true problems in the economy and the reasons for the current bad situation, after all, if a politician screws up, blame someone else and then get the public to support that position.

You pull the same games all the whiners do and only include base pay. Try again using this . http://militarypay.defense.gov/mpcalcs/calculators/rmc.aspx I put 2 for family to get higher bah.

O3 with 5 years is 87k total.find me average professional private sector making that.

Enlisted just as fair e5 with 8 is 57k. No degree 26 yr old no debt, free healthcare, gi bill, great family support. Find me that in private sector .many don't make that with a degree

Oh. And at least for now , 20 yrs and you get pension. Pension in real world? Hahah

The opinionated are opinion-less when presented with facts?

Any chance we can get back on track here?
How did we go from cruisers dying to GI pay scales?
