Anyone with experience laying hardwood flooring in the salon, passageways, etc. Using the proper vapor barrier and angled nails is cupping an issue? Refitting the interior, the PO sadly painted, so I am in the process of replacing with mahogany. Latest project was to rework the curved staircase by adding another step to decrease the heights of the risers (bad knees). This necessitated yanking the old washer/dryer and replacing the doors. Currently finishing the 3 steps from the galley to the lower passageway and then will replace carpeting with the mahogany flooring. Going to cut larger access hatches to facillitate working in the bilges.

I used Mirage engineered flooring. 1/2 inch thick, 5 inches wide. Lengths up to 7 ft when I bought it . I picked sapelle mahogany. Not the hardest of woods , but the grain and color worked . I thought about solid wood, but I worried about cupping and warping in the marine environment. I glued it down and also used stainless steel brads with an air gun . I haven’t done the lower decks yet ,but the upper decks have been done for over 2 years with no problem. The wear surface is 1/8 thick which means it could be sanded at least 3 times .

Our 53MY had solid oak tongue & groove flooring in the salon, stairs, galley, forward stateroom, mid stateroom and lower hall. No problems at all with cupping or any issues. It handled wear, water footprints from the aft deck, spills in the galley, wet mopping, etc. extremely well. There are tons of angle cuts to do the stairs, but totally great after it's done. All genny room trap door, engine removal panels and all flooring access panels were inlaid into the floors with finished oak framing.

Very nicely done. I have 3/4" thick solid sealed top & bottom. Used 1-1/2" Mongo for the steps. For the risers and curved rake, I veneered Honduras Mahogany & stained to match. I'll post pix when done with stairs & laundry. After stairs doing lower passageway, then ripping out the galley.
