i used to have a cat on the boat, which was great since i knew we werent' going to get rats or mices or... BUT... whenever we'd tie up a park on Key Biscayne, he'd go hunting into the woods for hours. Not only we had to wait for him to come back to leave... but he'd pring back some presents... usually lizards but also snakes !

he'd play with them for a while and then woudl loose interest... twice i stumbled on a snake in the galley, luckily before it woudl escape into the bilge or somewhere... but i can't be sure that he didn't bring others which i simply havent found !

first time i called the park rangers who grapped with a towel, second time i did it myself... yuk... about 20" long also... not pleasant.

PS
Ed... if you take Critter out on the boat, beware of what he might bring back !

The marina was due to make some repairs on the boat and I called them to warn them about the snake. They had one of the guys that works there say "no problem", he then went and removed the snake :D :D

I would personally press a crisp $100 bill into that guy's hand! Damn good work!

The "snake charmer" solution works well. On land. The unfortunate problem with it on a boat is that it also "charms" whatever is BEHIND said snake :D

We have quite a few up around here. The ones that are posionous I endeavor to run over with the lawn mower. The others I leave alone - they keep down the rodents.

I was delivering a Hatt and stopped in Belhaven NC. While standing on the platform fueling, a water snake tried to get me. I scurried up the ladder and the snake kept striking up out of the water at me on the aft deck, then it turned and shot under the water like a spear. Pure evil!!! The next morning I ran over a snake in the canal. I hope it was the same one.

That wouldn't have been River Forest Manor, would it have? A really weird place but a great bar and some great old photos in the Inn ala "The Shining"!

Sure was the River Forest. Back in the day it was THE place to stop. Reservations were needed to have dinner and the fuel dock was open late. It is sad that it is so delapidated. The last few times I stopped there we ate on the boat. I do not know if Mrs Smith is still alive, but it would be nice to see the place restored. Dave

Trojan, you could qualify for honorary Redneck with you list of techniques. Get'er done! LOL Hey, no joking aside, poisonous snakes are not to be played with unless you "know" what you are doing. I have no problem of grabbing one and moving it to a more natural habitat, they do serve a purpose. But for safety, I recommend dispatching them if you cannot find someone to remove it for you. They are not on the endangered species list. And unless they you are from some Asian country they are not one of your ancestors. LOL :D
