  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
34' CONVERTIBLE (1965 - 1969)
In an earlier thread anchoring in Florida waters was discussed. One of the points was derelict and abandoned boats. Well yesterdays wind and rain took down a flybridge small MY type boat first. It looked like the boat tied to it sank first and dragged down the bigger boat. This morning I looked again when it was light. A sailboat is wedged deep in the mangroves and another flybridge cruiser about 35' has its stern on the bottom and bow in the air. As the air pockets empty it is slowly making its way to the bottom. Guess another oil slick will be in my back yard.

Ug, hope not. The spoil islands near Dinner Key have a several large sailboats wedged deep into the mangroves after the last big blow. They are not ever coming out.

Actually every year or so the city or county hires a barge with excavator and goes around picking up the trash in the spoil islands or sunk near the islands.

They pick up the hulls, masts etc crushing them into big trash bins...

Every storm sends a derelict ashore or to the bottom...

Update: Two more sailboats sideways into the mangroves. Plus one powerboat that has been sitting along the mangroves is now full of water. May have already been sunk from before though. I am always worried about my boat when I travel for work and that is tied with long spring lines, plugged in, a plan to get it to the yard if needed, and at least my family would notice if it was sitting funny. What makes people thing you can leave a boat anchored in open water for long periods of time with no attention. None of these appeared to be abandoned. Now the taxpayers can pay for removal as well as damage from any floating debris.
