"a auto socket will probably not work because the ends are rounded and it will not get enough bite on the nut."

Yep...you are right! :( And the largest plumbing type socket I can find locally is 1 1/2"...too small. The drain is bedded with something (knowing Hatt, it's 5200) that won't allow it to be turned from the top. While trying to turn it, the cross in the drain broke through with no movement at all from the drain itself. I can now see that the leak is caused by a crack in the drain. I ordered three new drains from Sams. Looks like cutting it out from above is going to be the only way...

I dont know what it is with shower water but when the sump overflows or you have a leak in one of the drain hoses its one of the worst smells on the boat that I've seen.

Pissing in the shower? Linda had some kind of conditioner that caused a god awful smell in the sump. Of course she had about 10 bottles of chemicals in the shower!

I have found the same awful smell in home showers as well. I used to open the drain and pull out a huge wad of hair and soap scum which was really foul. The solution is to keep the hair out and use a liquid soap that doesn't form scum. No issues since. And the liquid soap leaves a cleaner shower stall.

Dremel tool cutting the drain in half (splitting top and bottom) from above took care of it. Fortunately the upper half was NOT bedded with 5200, just silicone so it pried out without much problem. Had to go buy a dremel since though I have one at home, I have never had one on the boat though I have often said I should get one. This gave me an excuse. :)

FWIW, there is no coring in the shower pan, just solid FG.

Stepping out of the shower to take a leak.... Now that's class!!! [SUB]Rodney Dnagerfield[/SUB]

It may be class, but it's also desireable on a boat where to will take many cycles of the sump pump to completely rid the sump of this odor generating high nitrogen nutrient. I.e. your sump will smell better if you don't piss in it:cool:

That's why they make clorox!

A dollop now and then takes care of a myriad of odor issues.

Mike, I spent ten years studying the effect of 0.1-1.0 ppm chlorine on various plastics and rubber. Damages across the nation as a result of the chlorine in city water were huge. So I always take the conservative approach and avoid chlorine if at all possible and recommend same to my friends.
YMMV
