This time of year the California spiny lobster season is in full swing. Last weekend I was piloting at night and ran into a mine field of lobster pots. Unfortunately one got wrapped around the port prop. I was able to shut off the engines before any real damage was done. My buddy, who is a commercial diver jumped in the water at 2am and cut the pot loose. I can't thank him enough but for the future I've been looking at shaft line cutters. The two I'm considering are the Shark and Piranha which are easy to install on the shaft while the boat is in the water.

Has anybody tried either of these?

There was a review with video of various line cutters. You might do a search. I have a simple cutter that looks like a circular knife in front of the prop. I know it has cut at least one line because I found a piece that was left on it.

What brand of line cutter do you have?

Ron, I have no idea, they were on the boat when I bought it. They are really simple round knives. No serrations or anything.

I’m also interested as I’m in CA and the nets during lobster season are brutal. What is the cost to install? Can a diver do it I assume?

I'm going to use the Shark and found the best price through Jamestown Distributors. $667 each for ones that fit a 2" to 3" shaft. I have 3" shafts on my boat. Diver is charging $40 per shaft installed.

I had "Prop Spurs" line cutters on my 53MY. Once we were near Steinhatchee at a small dock with 3/4" braided nylon dock lines on the nailed-in dock cleats. A serious wind came up and the boat blowing around broke the aft line's cleat right off the dock and floated behind the boat. With the bow lines still on, the bow was going to crush into a boat in front of us so I started up the SB engine and put it in reverse, which pulled the now floating 3/4" dock line into my port prop. I didn't know what happened, but I remembered hearing a chomp, chomp, chomp as I eased the stern back against the dock. It had cut the line cleanly in 2 places. I also hit a crab pot line once which separated easily. Prop Spurs are more serious to put on, but they work perfectly.
