I just sold my Boston whaler to a gentlemen in Boston, I live in Florida anyone have any suggestions how we both can be comfortable in the exchange of money and title since I sold the boat on Boat trader with no broker.

An independent third party could hold the funds and not distribute them until both parties sign off. This would usually be an attorney. I'm not an attorney nor do I like to use them unless it is absolutely necessary.

I sold a car once on ebay and the guy trusted me enough to send the money in a personal check. I was to deposit it and wait for it to clear before mailing the title to him. In another case, I sold a motorhome to a guy in Canada. That time I used an attorney friend to hold the funds.

Good luck. This is a tough one unless one of you takes a chance and trusts the other to perform on his end.

Is the gentleman coming to Florida to pick up the boat? If he is, have him bring you cash. He'll have to trust your title is valid, and if that's a concern you and he could go to the tag office and have it verified.

If he's not picking up the boat, there's alot of trust on both ends.

I sold my Grady White to a guy 200 miles away from me. He picked up the boat in person, and paid me with a cashiers check. I locked the cabin with a padlock, and took the padlock key and ignition key with me. I told him I'd send them once the payment cleared. That worked out very well for both of us. Don't know if an arrangement like that would work for you.

There are many escrow services available to handle these types of transactions for very reasonable fees.

Depending on how much the sale price was, Paypal can be a blessing. I bought my car this way, knowing that if something went sideways the total purchase price was under Paypal's guaranteed amount. All I had to do was tell them the deal went wrong and after a bit of an attempt to right it, they would have refunded the whole purchase price.

Or, an attorney, as stated above. As a future member of the tribe, I should probably be recommending them first, but there are better ways to do what you want to do without the high cost of a lawyer.

Take a good read of http://www.paypalsucks.com/ and you may change your mind...

According to PayPal accepting their ToS (Terms of Service) in effect means you waive your rights to credit card consumer protection laws if you want to use their service, and that you may not issue a chargeback for unauthorized use of your credit card and PayPal account, or if you do, then they have the right to limit your account.

I live near Boston. If I can do anything to help let me know. I guess the important question is how and where is the boat changing hands? If you need a Boston area lawyer I can put you in touch with mine.

Thank you all I am Having my bank Manager finish the deal he has the title and when he sees the funds received the title goes.

That was smart, I'm going to ask my bank manager if he will do that. I have a person out of province that wants to buy my sports car. Thanks.

Set up Pay Pal account.

BoatUS provides escrow services for members. I think it is a free service.
