  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
52' CONVERTIBLE (1983 - 1990)
I have side vents with about 20 screws in it. I did not paint them just thought it looked bad that way. The screws are rusting so got some new ones from west marine they rusted in about 90 days. Went to Fastnall got some 316 or what ever were their high dollar ones. After about 90 days i got rust runs i have to clean with barkeepers soap every time i wash getting old. My question the screws are not holding much weight. Is there sutch a thing as nylon phylips head screws say number 8s. Or any other suggestions.....

Auto parts stores would have nylon pop rivets, and other reusable plastic fasteners. A lot of today's,cars are held together with them.

You can get Monel screws from Sam's. They aren't cheap, but they do NOT rust.

Everything I've ever gotten from Fastenal was junk. I would try McMaster-Carr and see if they have real 316SS screws. I suspect you paid for 316, but didn't get it.

McMaster has the legit 316 Stainless, their 18-8 fasteners are much better than most everything out there too. Also, polishing the heads or any other stainless part with compound on a wheel before installing really helps.

Monel is the way to go.

Get them from Sam's.

Sky is ( as usual) correct.. Monel rocks

Google nylon screws. Tons to choose from.

What am I, chopped liver? :) LOL

Maybe I AM chopped liver, come to think of it.

I have never been disappointed with anything I got from McMaster-Carr. AND usually it's here within 48 hours, often the next morning after the order. They are amazing.

To all many many thanks!

I just googled McMaster-Carr. I have never heard of them before, I downloaded the app and love it. So much kool stuff to buy. Like a kid in a candy store. Lol. Thanks guys.

As a guy that designs and builds one-of-a-kind scientific instruments and medical devices, I use McMaster Carr all the time. I have an account with them and order a ton of stuff.
Due to this I'm on their "most favored customer" list. Their main west coast warehouse is ~80 miles from me and they deliver (by courier no less) two hours after I place an order.
I love McMaster, they're not cheap but they actually stock everything, plus they only have top quality merchandise and when I screw up an order.....they apologize!

I'm surprised to hear negative comments about Fastenal. I sourced all sorts of 316 SS fasteners from them and never had a rusting issue.

I've also been very happy with McMaster Carr. They do have everything - including 19-1/2" long fuel tank gauges for my Hatteras fuel tanks. That said, when I need stainless, I use the Nutty Company - mainly because I can drive there in Milford, Ct - but also because I have always been very happy with the quality of their stainless.

What about building us a super pair of fishing plires ss of corse?? The ones i get my hands on last about 1/2 of a season.

Bob, I just searched the nutty company web site it seems all their stainless screws are 18/8. If I read the discription correctly 18/8 is equivalent to 304 and not 316 marine grade please advise me if I'm incorrect I too am close to Milford

Honestly don't know. I just have not had problems with their stainless. I do know it's a lot better than what I've bought at Home Depot.

There is a Fastenal in Annapolis. Their stuff is ok for home projects. Anything for the boat or cars, forget it. McMaster is the best source I have. Their stock list is astonishing. I also use Fawcett who are a local chandlery. They are very good, too.

If you haven't used 316ss you are in for a pleasant surprise. It is very corrosion resistant in salt water. As for Monel, well, it is in a class by itself. Costs a lot and worth it.
