Rust Stain Removal

Someone suggested a product called Magica that would presumably remove rust stains before your very eyes....yea right!

Well, here's a before and after shot. It really is amazing stuff. Rust this heavy took a few applications, but within about 10 minutes, the "before" became the "after". Smaller spots, like where the anchor was sitting, really did disapear while I watched. I've since tried it on stainless fittings with similar results.

No interest in the product other than as an amazed user, though I am thinking about checking into distributing now that I've seen the results.

Muriatic acid takes rust stains right out.

You really should neutralize the acid(s) with some baking soda. Acid may aggravate the oxidation process with vigor. ws

Don't know what the stuff is, but you should try to use the weakest acid possible to minimize damage to the Imron. FSR contains oxalic acid which is a good chelating agent and not as strong as muriatic or hydrochloric acid.

Back when I ran the sub north, she developed that nasty mustache up front and NOTHING took it off ecept oxalic acid. Spray on and rinse off. Found out it works equally as well on rusty well water stains around the house. A spoonful in the crapper and it looks like new! ws

Try Sno-Bol toilet bowl cleaner for removing rust stains. Put it on and let it sit for a few minutes and you will watch the stains disappear. Just be sure to rinse the area really well to neutralize it afterwards. It is formulated to take rust stains away along. I think it has some kind of soap that makes it really effective and easy to wash away.

One caution: if you are using it near a stanchion fitting like this be sure to let the Sno-Bol (or anything else you choose to use) flow up to the fitting but not onto it. The acid in a cleaner will eat the surface of the polished stainless and create small crevices where corrosion will start.

Hey gang,
I have the reputation at our dock for working miracles with chemicals. To remove the rust stains without harming chrome or other finishes, try Ospho, available from Ace hardware ) and other sources. It turns iron oxide (rust) into iron phosphate, which is a good base for paint and will leave unpainted steel with a protective coating that will slow down the formation of new rust. It literally will work before your eyes!
Our old steel anchor sends rust stains all over the deck after a dousing in salt water. I use a spray bottle of Ospho to spray the anchor and rust marks and they disapear like majic. It doesn't even need to be rinsed.
