Very good advice on the filters- been there on my previous boat, lost both engines and genset coming into Norfolk on the Lafayette River, threw out both Fortress anchors and thank God they held and kept me off the coal piers at Lambert's Point until a TowBoatUS could get them and pull me to MM zero and Tidewater Yacht. Carry at least four times the filters you think you will need.

I didn’t put dual filters in my boat during the repower and i regret not having done so. Being able to go down and flip a valve can be a boat saver. At some point I ll add a second racor with a valve along with a priming pump.

I checked the racors and found one to be half full of green crap. I drained the bowl and replaced the filter. It’s a good thing I did. I ran into 4 footers on Lake Huron today. Splashing all of that around in the tank may have been disastrous

That there is some of the best advice you can get right now. Make sure you have spare filters. BTW if they are 5 microns you can back down to 30. We normally ran with 5 but we are fair weather boaters. I swapped them out once on the Rondout in NYS and they were LOADED.

If you run 30 micron in your primaries, then you will likely plug up your secondaries first. I'd much rather run a 2 micron primary and be able to just turn a valve to another primary than be stuck out in rough water trying to change a secondary.

Must have been 50k nm or more running 30 microns racors.. never had an issue. Racors and the secondaries gets replaced every oil change though. That’s on 3412Es And C32s

2 micron on your primaries is a little overkill. It doesn't take much to plug a 2 micron filter. 30micron primaries trap the majority of particles (even most of the the small 2 micron particles), but they will hold a butt pile more junk and still allow flow than a 2 micron filter will.

30 micron on primaries is optimal, then the already very clean fuel enters the 2 micron secondaries for a final pass. I doubt you would notice much, if any difference in secondaries with a 2 micron vs 30 micron primary. But a 2 micron primary would be VERY quick to plug given any considerable debris.

Of course if your fuel (and fuel source) are super clean then running 2 micron primaries won't be the end of the world, but nothing wrong with running 30 micron primaries and the vast majority would be best served by doing such.

My BAD! They were 2 mic filters not 5's. Been too long. I need another boat. Maybe some day the 48 LRCs will get reasonable LOL.

I’ve run 2 micron 2020sm filters since I put on the Racors in 1978. Never have had a problem I’d rather have as much as I can get in the Racors because they’re easier to change and less likely to require bleeding air out of the system. And quite honestly the real problem stuff that blocks filters is probably way more than 30 micron anyway.

BTW if the boat is new to you I would not shock the tank with algaecide until I was ready to swap filters.

42 ft convertible, 4 to 5 ft seas which are normal days in alaska and on the beam or tail its real rolly, but manageable
