Mike I cant speak for the people who worked on your wife's car but I know of some very good MB mechanics.

Yes there are some professionals less qualified than others but there are also some hobbyists that know their stuff too.

My point is that professionals that do this type of work on the nice new and expensive toys are usually more capable of getting it done right. The MB dealers hire kids to do the jobs that dont need real experts and that's why you got gomer instead of Klauss to fix some things at the dealer level. its all price Vs quality.

About that Mercedes quality, read this!
http://badmercedes.com/
Inspite of all the myth and glory surrounding the brand, it may shock you to find out that between 1992 and 1996, virtually ALL Mercedes-Benz produced, from the cheapest to the opulent, were equipped with certain engine wiring components that disintegrate over time. The wiring insulation under the hood cracks and falls apart. It doesn't matter how well you maintain your car, if you drive it little or alot, if you garage it or let it sit out in the street, if you pamper or abuse it - the insulation in the engine wiring harness will crack and eventually turn into dust over time. There is no way of stopping this from happening, for the wire insulators were built purposefully with "green" materials that crumble. Bare spots on wires start shorting, and strange things begin to happen to your car.

Herr Chefingenieur Zetsche worked then in the Development Division of the Mercedes-Benz passenger cars. If it wasn't his idea to put eco-wiring under the hood of every Mercedes, at least he should have known about it as a professional electrical engineer in the employ of Mercedes-Benz. The biodegradable insulator in the loom was installed on his watch. But he didn't warn consumers about the dangers of driving with a faulty engine harness, not even when he became the boss. Mercedes-Benz has never officially issued a safety recall for biodegradable wiring harnesses, while knowing full well that it may become deadly over time. Bad Mercedes: it is not a question of IF, but WHEN!

I should have stated that after they quoted 1500 on the phone, I did the disassembly/spritz/reassembly myself. They would not consider anything except replacing the assembly in question because "it's not serviceable." But it is if you remove it and actually take it apart!

They wanted 800 to fix the non-working pneumatic door closers - I repaired the leaking plastic vacuum tank with JB Weld. :)

OTOH, I do agree with your assessment. There are some excellent pros and some excellent amateurs in probably any field you can name...as well as the opposite.

it is not about "Make right vs make do"... it's about choosing the set up which matches your own needs!

most of us do not need stacked inverters to run the whole boat... most of do not want to run a single air con at night... in these cases, a single marine inverter properly installed using the built in xfer switch is not making do, it is making right

just like for your own use, you do not consider an inverter to be necessary.

And the original post was about running much more than a few things or do you disregard that as it is not the way you want it to be.

As I said I have designed and installed systems like he asked for. Have you?

Robust Inverter Set Up
I am trying to get input on desiging an inverter system for my 67 CPMY. It has 7 TV's, 6 ac's, 3 freezers, dishwasher and washer dryer. No inverter will power all of this but I would like to build the most robust inverter system possible. I searched the prior posts and think this one sort of describes the starting point:

Now as "helpfull" as so many people think Pascal is. How is he helping Bruce when he disregards the wants and needs of the original post to by telling him he is wrong to want what he wants?

Yawn...

I guess you didn't read my first reply...

What I haven't seen is a practical reply from you explaining how you would set up a system to meet his needs...

Probably because you don't have assess to his PM's. I will not put the whole deal on the site to be torn apart or used improperly.

Just like a Dr. will not post self diagnosis and treatment information.

If the OP chooses to seek professional design and integration assistance it is his business.
