Maynard, you have burned more than your share of fossil fuel, including nitromethane, if I am not mistaken. So driving an electric car is what you should be doing. You have also motivated me to try one out. Except there is no longer a GM dealer in Annapolis, MD; they got toe-tagged a year or two ago in the big GM meltdown. But I will find one and drive it. Especially if I could plug it in at work at the hospital. I am spending $100/month just on gas to go to the hospital to work. Can I lease one for that much?

Jim I will gladly exchange fuel bills with you. $100/ month would be a dream unless gas was down to $.40 a gallon.

I drive to where work needs me and did about 40K miles last year. If I got a hybrid I could get there cheaper but I would spend all the savings and then some shipping my gear all over the place.

By the way I have 2 trucks that are almost always carrying either 3-4 people and or 700+ lbs of stuff. Sometimes more. I hate the soccer mom who drives the excursion with 2 kids and thinks it's cool. She burns more fuel going to get her nails done than Jim does in a month.

Strange to hear discussions on fuel conservation on a boating forum. I burn about 100GPH at cruise. My car gets about 27-29MPG on the highway and the SUV gets around 23MPG. I was thinking of naming the 65 "Carbon Foot Print" but think it might piss off too many. I'm all for saving where I can but these big boats aren't very "green".

Screw conservation I am more concerned with being able American business being able to afford to send people on the road as necessary. No travel no earn.

jack, at the first gulf coast rendezvous, they had a hatt motoryacht on display.. the name was..................."global warmer"

I also thought "Big Foot" would be good but it would need explaining. My 65EB w/12V92's is still pretty economical compared to the 16V92 boats I looked at. What the heck was I thinking?! My next boat will probably be a 15' row boat.

When I heard you had bought that beast I did a thumbnail calculation on the fuel cost to get her from Theendsoftheearth, Fl. home to NJ. Its a BIG number. Yes, what were you thinking? Good thing you made such a nice buy on her. Yeah, OK I'm a little jealous.

Its my life's mission to die with a zero bank balance, the credit cards fully maxed out, and having left a sizable carbon footprint. A big Hatteras sounds like just the ticket.

Well said, Eric! :)

Yes, and the check to the undertaker should bounce....:)

I actually drive quite a bit more than that, but I really started thinking about an electric car when I realized that I drive 40 miles to work, stay there for ten hours, and drive 40 miles home. This would be an ideal use for a car like a Volt. I'm going to look into this. The only question is really can I make the numbers work- like could I lease one of those cars cheaply enough to make the cost justifiable. I don't need to drive my Tacoma pickup to the hospital (and it is the smallest truck I could find that would do the job)

Like said above, I don't mind that my boat burns a lot of fuel- no one expects economy from something with two engines and the ability to sleep several people. Nor do I mind it with my sports cars etc. But if I could get the eighty miles a day out of a wall socket, I'd be delighted.

Just to get this thread back on track, our new risers are done and have been shipped. The total cost for all four was $3270 including shipping. We will drive our new Volt,( you will love a Volt Jim), down to Florida in early June. I hope to have them up and running after a one week install and test session.

Hey Maynard, I wonder which would cost more to drive to Florida: Your Volt or my Jetta TDI? If I get 46mpg+ driving straight through with one fuel stop(14 gallon tank), I think I would win. :)

Good luck with the manifold swap out. Take some pics.

About the same Sky..The first 50 miles on our Volt are free. The rest are about 40 to 42 mpg. The real strong point of the Volt is city driving. If you don't need to exceed 45 miles in a day, you burn no gas. The charge costs about $1.20 depending on your electric rates and how low the battery is. A charge on 220 volts takes 3 hours empty to full. This thing is a wonderful car to drive; uncanny acceleration to 50 mph also. GM did a good job this time.

Last I heard they had only sold about 1700 of them. Wonder why? Price?

They are lined up to buy them. They are purposely doing a slow intro. After July 1st. the entire line at Hamtramick will be Volts. Watch the fleet grow then. It really is a great car.

5 Year Detail

This was on the internet so it must be true.

based on the Volt getting 95 MPG (thats probably 45 on the charge and another 40 on the gallon of gas) they did not convince me. plus neither car could comfortably carry all the stuff I need to haul around so I will stick with the truck.

Scott...Trucks are great, they just burn lots of fuel. The Volt holds a lot of stuff, I was amased. It really is a good second car for local driving. The Volt is a very different car, but it is a real car, not like the Prius which is a soup can in my opinion. Try it, I bet you'll like it. It is great to use no gas and laugh at the people that hate us.:)

40mies is just not enough.if I were looking for a small car the tdi makes more sense. It cost less and is getting the same milage on the engine.

I just want to stop buying fuel from folks that hate us. The Volkswagon TDI isn't cheap either. I wrote a check for $37,000 for our Volt. This included all taxes, (6% sales tax in MI), and included the $7,500 rebate from Obama.

Back on this topic, I now have the 4 copper risers. Paul did a very nice job. $ 3,270.00 including shipping. We will head to Miami with our Volt after Memorial Day so I can install and check them out. More later.
