Repower - good deal on rebuilt Cummins?

Getting closer to pulling the trigger on the repower.

Lately....most all those I talk with are telling me to go Yanmar. They say the Cummins are way to heavy for the boat and my water line will be underwater! But they are almost twice the Cummins! From what I read...the 330b's Cummins should be fine.
What I really don't know is.....who the heck to use to install them?

First off the 330b is awesome in the 34 or the 36C.

Too heavy is BS.

Second if your looking for installation I would look towards a company that can stand behind their work. Usually you will find the companies that are cummins and yanmar dealers have the experience to do it right. Guys like Dave (captdis) also have years of experience doing this too but don't usually sell the factory motors. Either way I would suggest you do it right the first time because its more expensive to fix it afterwards.

I would hope that Dan (34hatt on forum) could set you straight. He did an excellent re-power with the 330B package a few years back on End of The Line (EOTL), but the website seems to have moved.

Also, X2 what Scott said about weight. There are true professionals here who can say absolutely, but my investigations when preparing to re-power my 34C were that the B series Cummins are actually a modern light weight, high-revving power plant (rated medium duty which is important). They weigh something like 1500 lbs. so I wonder if your source was referring to some heavy older blocks.

I just ran shark 1007's 34 with older 315 hp cummins 6b. Full rebuild. New genny. Upgraded electrical and much more was recently done.

2900 rpms and almost 28 kts with 4 big guys, 260 gal fuel. 90 water. Fighting chair. Fish box and rigging stations.

Worked with Dan on prop sizes to get right where we needed at full load rpm.

FWIW at 24 kts in a chop you feel it in your neck after a few minutes.

You won't be sorry with the Cummins. As discussed only go with the factory remans.

Have you check out Great Lakes Diesel in Huron? I don't know anything about them other than having seen them at the boat show. Don't know of any others on Lake Erie. As far as 6bta's too heavy I'm sure my 4-53t's outweigh them by a good bit, and my waterline is probably 2-3" above the chine.

Hey Dave if you want to travel Ill get you the engines?

You keep saying you want to head up north and visit KIWI and others.

The engine rooms on the 34C and 36C aren't a lot different. The Cummins B series are perfectly fine for the 34C. You don't need to spend twice as much on Yanmars.

As far as the installation goes, I think you need to do a lot of asking around locally to see who is comfortable doing repowers. An amateur can't do this- at least not to the standard you want. Keep in mind that Cummins Marine has to sign off on the repower installation for the warranty to go into effect. In addition to the plumbing, you are talking about new engine beds and mounts, possibly moving the water intakes and/or making them larger, etc etc. You really only want to do this once.

You mean modify the engine beds like this?

Yes, like that. It's a nice job. Who did it for you? Mine look like that, except they aren't painted (Is that paint or powder coating?)

I painted them. That was the 42 I re-powered last summer. I would have powder coated them but time didn't allow.

You're probably better off. I'm not a fan of powdercoat. Most of the powdercoated stuff I've seen is improperly prepared and the stuff comes off in sheets.

To take them to the powdercoat shop for cleaning and prep would have added 4 or 5 days to get them done right. I could not add 4 days to the project and ask the customer to pay for yard storage while I had them coated. Im not sure but I dont think he expected them to be cleaned up and painted either but I do as I see the need.
