  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
38' CONVERTIBLE-Series II (1987 - 1991)
Thinking of redoing the salon floor in my 38c. There is a company that makes teak and holly veneer 3/4” plywood. Would it pay to remove subfloor and put this down or use something like plasteak or amtico over the original subfloor?

The teak and holly thing is an art to get all truly level and all lined up. Make sure you hire the right guy. I spent 9K on my salon, galley, guest berth, and guest head. Got what I paid for.

I ordered teak and holly plywood from a wholesaler on the East Coast of FL who was really great. The price was the best I'd seen, they packaged and delivered it really well and the salesman was great. I'll dig to try to find the name. It's probably somewhere in my "My First Hatt" thread.

T&H plywood is so easy if you have the old pieces as a template. Otherwise, it's tough to get it just right in tight spots like the galley. It's expensive but so is all good plywood these days. You just cut and lay it out until it's perfect, then glue it down and proceed to put a lot of coats on.

We did this over the winter. Pics attached. Expense is in the prep. So much needed to sit level and fit well. Beautiful when done but embarrassingly expensive on this boat.

Did you finish yours after laying it down? Mine was spray coated at the shop, cut to fit, and edges finished before laying down. I would like to add coats (dogs already scratched it up some) and wondering what you used and how it was applied.

Amtico still looks new with no maintenance after 13 years. we did the stairs, galley, forward berth and 3 heads. Liked it so much, phase 2 was the salon and lower helm.
Expensive, but pretty indestructible. installation requires a skilled carpenter.

That would've been a whole lot easier...and smarter. But I wanted to use one long piece in the galley. I had to use thin 1/4 inch plywood so I could bend it into place. Prefinished it would've gotten all scratched to hell as I bent and beat it into place. Was a bit difficult!

After it was glued down and dried, I applied the poly. I simply applied three coats of oil-based Minwax satin poly (cheaper) and then 3 coats of oil-based Verathane gloss to finish. Looks deep and great. Of course, I covered much of it with rug mats so it won't get scratched. But that oil based is a lot more resistant to water damage than the water based stuff. You have to sand it well before application to make sure it spreads evenly. However, I don't really know of anything harder and more scratch resistant.

When I had the boat shop, we had a resin pump and gun. You could spray a large piece with resin in 5 seconds and it would be clear and thick and perfect...and durable. That's the way to go if you know where to go.

That's who I called. They were cheaper and the agent was very helpful. They shipped the stuff over here in the most protected packaging I've ever seen.
