Hatteras Model
53' EXTENDED DECKHOUSE (1983 - 1988)
If I want to remove all of the dinghy stuff on the roof of my 53 ED, what can I expect to find for fasteners? I cannot see how they are through bolted, so would they just be big screws?

Can't answer your question, but am interested in dingy mounts if you want to part with them and they fit for me.

I think mine are all just screwed and caulked; the trim ring around the davit as well as the chocks.

I would feel better if they were thru-bolted and I may just do that this winter while I am replacing headliner in the salon.

On our 53MY the dinghy chocks or mounts, or whatever you call them, are screwed, NOT through-bolted to the roof. It appears to have been installed when the boat was new though possibly not oem from Hatt since there is no mention of it at all in the oem papers.

I would never have installed them that way - without through bolts - but I have to admit, there is no sign of water intrusion and the fittings/mounts are very tight. There is evidence of plenty of 5200 applied during installation so I assume that is the reason there is no problem. The tiedown anchors are also not through bolted and they have handled 65+MPH wind gusts with no sign of stress.

That being said, one of my low level projects is to remount everything using throughbolts.

So I guess the answer to your question is that you could find either through bolts or not!

my dinghy chocks are thru bolted with big backing plates... i feel much better that way ! they're visible under the hard top on the aft deck but that's ok...

it's not that thick, under 2 inches, i cant' believe that they'd rely on screws thru one layer of glass into balsa core, even though the load is applied sideways, not a straight pull.

Mine are bolted through with acorn nuts on the cradles and the 4 eye pads. My headliner is F/G and the roof is about 4 inches thick. Mine need re-bedding as I have one bolt that drips and it has a nice blue/green patina :-) The dinghy hardware is way to the left by the back door. ws ws

Thanks for all the feedback. I can feel something through the headliner in the salon so I imagine they are thru bolted. For now, I think I will have just the hoist removed along with the post since they are outside. and will deal with the rest later.
