Okay, how much for this? If two done at the same time, any discount?
I am guessing about 3K per hole, or a mere 72K to do, plus how much for removal and installation? Ouch in any event.

Also how much to do the trannys? Do they usually way outlast the motors? Or, are you asking for trouble by hooking up newly rebuilt engines to old trannys?

How many hours can be expected out of the 12-71s, and trannys?

Thanks.

Do you have turbo charged 12-71s? What horsepower rating and specifics please?

Fortunately, I have neither. If I become an owner with these motors/trannies I want to know the worst case situation, should one or both motors/trannies fail.

The majority of these motors have turbos as I understand. Frankly, I'd prefer no turbos and putz along at low speed, but this is not the way things were when the boats were manufactured. It seems half the boat owners I know have had problems with their darn turbos at one time or another. But, that is irrelevant to this discussion. The motors would have to be rebuilt with the standard turbo set up.

Thanking you in advance for your answer. Also, I guess only the very best shops should be used to have a decent warranty, so the price should reflect that. I have learned not to deal with discounters on this type of stuff.

I believe non-turbo DD's are rated @ >10,000 hr. Rebuilt motors (out of boat) are between $2-3k/hole, and trannys cost about $3-5k each for a complete rebuild.

I just did my port side Allison and it was about $3500 That was for the labor with all new bearings etc. The clutches were like new and if you need them they run about $700 each and theres 2 in each gear~! ws

Allisons last pretty much forever if you keep the shafts aligned and don't let the motor mounts droop. But these do sneak up on you.

If you have the engines out for a rebuild you might as well do the transmissions as well while it's opened up. Clean and paint all the metal, do the engine rooms and decks while there is room to turn around. The tops of my engines looked pretty good, but the bottoms did not. Transmission cost appears to be only about 1/8 of engine rebuild cost.

Thanks guys, great info as always.
