RARE Hatteras sighting! 28 Sport Fish

Apparently, in 1966 only, Hatteras offered a 28' Flybridge Sport Fish model. Few folks have ever seen one. How's this for a rare treat?


Cool looking boat huh? The owner just had new Crusaders installed. He's planning on refinishing is next.

when i was a kid about 45 years ago there was one down the bayou from my house in pass christian ms., her name was "rezloh", the owners name backwards holzer. i thought that a fine boat when i was little. flash forward till about 15 years ago, there was another one that anchored in bay st. louis quite regularly called "diamond lil", and i had a friend that owned one that he docked in biloxi ms. at the palace casino marina named "hattack" i know the last 2 cant be the same boat because i saw them around the same time, but either one could be the previous "rezloh"

Must say it's a damn sight nicer effort than Bertram's 28. Although the market didn't seem to think so. Too bad.

Goldbergs the first kind of discount boating supply in Philly had one at Atlantic city marina. I remember Hatt advertised you could waterski behind it.

I've only seen one in person. When I first moved to NJ there was one in the yard where I stored my boat for the winter. I remember looking at it and being surprised she was a Hatteras. Nice looking big little boat. That was almost 27 years ago when I was just starting out and thought I'd never be able to own a Hatteras. About 6 years later I bought my 46C

Hey Scrod, I think we all agree this little Hatteras 28 is a stunner. However, lets not discount the 28 Bertram. I've owned 2 of them over the years, and they were superb in every respect. I personally thought the 28 was superior to the 31 because of the comparable dry ride.

I'm also aware of another Hatt 28 I saw in Miami a few years back. They sure didn't build many of them. The owner bought this one up in Mass a few years ago.

Hey Scrod, I think we all agree this little Hatteras 28 is a stunner. However, lets not discount the 28 Bertram. I've owned 2 of them over the years, and they were superb in every respect. I personally thought the 28 was superior to the 31 because of the comparable dry ride.

The Bertram was obviously quite successful considering the number of them around. I take nothing away from it, but like the guys on the Bertram forum say, it looks like a Hyena.

I have one, hull #005. Bought it from a marine electronics guy on Kent Island quite few years back. Named "Serious Business", it had 504 Cummins and I had big naïve dreams. Trucking from Mass to MI ran about $2K. At the time (2006) I tracked down about 18 of the 31 28' sport fish versions that were built, including one owned by a guy named Bruce who worked for Hatteras. I think Eric has some knowledge of this. There were about 70 28' cruisers built. I still have the hull, sold the Cummins, bought some Steyr diesels and ran out of money and will. I've got the hull on a 4 axle tag trailer under shrink-wrap. Would love to have it finished, Tugboat Willie, ya hear me? Howzabout it Sky? I've also got an interesting article about the 28' cruiser reviewed by Powerboat Magazine. I could e-mail it to someone more techno-savvy than I am and they could post it. I also have a great concept sketch of a 28' offshore express graciously provided by Tom Slane. I still carry a picture of a sistership ("Tonka's Toy", owned at the time by a Doug Erath in NY) in my wallet. I still have a soft spot in my heart, but not so much in my brain anymore. I don't think I have ever seen a 28SF in person but they are really nice looking boats. For years I wanted to upgrade from my outboard cuddy to a Betram 28. A couple of owners told they were great boats as an offshore/weekender but rolled liked buoy in while slow trolling or bottom fishing. Another pocket Sportfish that I have always admired is the Blackfin 32 and 29. They are pretty spartan inside but everything I have read on them says they are superb handling boats with low COG and very fishable. There are several available currently in all levels of condition from total projects to really nicely kept examples.

Funny I was going to post that I have seen about 4 with a bridge and a few without and that a friend owned one I have have been on, It was Doug's boat Tonka's Toy just saw Doug last weekend I will tell him you still carry the picture

I didn't realize that yours was a flybridge sport fisher. I would be more interested in a 28 cruiser. But I'll still look you up when I get over that way. I'd love to see her just the same.
