  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
The tidal surge wasn't much, but was enough for me to lift the 30 amp dock shorepower connections up with a piece of rope to keep them out of the seawater. I avoided the tide but with the dock connector facing up rather than hanging down, rainewater leaked into the female dock plug and shorted it out.

I need to relocate the outlets to get a little more elevation and would like to also make it more rain proof. Any suggestions regarding the type plug and/or its orientation will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Vincent

Smart Plug: Boatside Shore Power Inlet & Connector Assembly
Safe Alternative to Old-Style Shore Power Connectors

A safe, affordable, easy-to-use alternative to twist-lock shorepower connections. SmartPlug's innovative shape and secure locking mechanism protect against loose connections and corrosion - the leading causes of marine fire and electrocution. Locks on both sides of the connector snap into the inlet so you can both feel and hear the positive connection being made; no twisting required. To release, simply squeeze the two side levers. The connector and inlet bodies nest together so aligning the pins is a snap. Physically very strong, any side pressure from the powercord is absorbed by the body and not by the electrical pins as in twist-lock connectors.
• Easily retrofits to your boat's existing shorepower inlet
• Reduces electrical shorts from loose connections
• Intuitive to use - only one plug-in orientation - even in the dark
• Easy-to-connect straight pins - with larger contact surface area than curved pins
• Triple waterproof neoprene seals prevent corrosion
• Trip-style thermostat built right into receptacle (epoxy potted) prevents overheating
• To replace a plug or connector on an existing cordset, just cut off the old end, strip the wires and fasten to the SmartPlug
• Certified to meet ABYC and UL marine requirements

Mailman,
Thanks for the reply.
Regarding Smartplug, I have two on the boat and am well pleased with them.
Their website does not show a shoreside connection that I can find.
Using the shipside connection on the shore seem a little dangerous since the shipside connector is male and live male plugs strikes me as a little dangerous.
Am I missing something?
Regards
Vincent

The smartplug is better than the 30 twist lock that we all know so well but before going to that I was considering the 50A twist.

Since the 50 has more contact area than the smart plug and allows me to upgrade the system at the same time I think thats the way to go.

do they make a boatside 125/250 50amp receptacle and cord end ? i haven't seen one yet, they said it would be out soon, and that was about a year ago

I talked to them 2 year ago and they were close to releasing the 50A version. Still have not seen it but I would not count on it coming out soon.
