Question concerning replacement of Helm Chair and Anchor

I am in the process of replacing my Helm Chair on the Flybridge of my 53my and have seen a ladder back style from Todd that looks appealing(see link below) This same style is available from Pompanette, but runs about twice the price. Does anyone have experience with either of these manufacturers? I have heard of the Pompanette brand before, but is it worth the extra $$$$

Also replacing my anchor, and am looking at changing from a Danforth to a Plow anchor. Is there a rule of thumb that I should follow for the size or weight?

pompanette is a very good product, but it's quite likely that you'll be equally satisfied with the less expensive todd.

sailorman here in sofla always has todds around for even less than this...

the basic rule of thumb is 1 pound of anchor per foot of length of your vessel.

i prefer a little overkill here.

Todd makes good chairs, but check your height. The WM model comes with a 15inch pedestal........usually you use a 30inch.

There's an excellent book on anchoring, anchors, ground tackle, etc. named The Complete Book of Anchoring and Mooring, by Earl Hinz. The anchor weight depends on the type of anchor and weight of the boat. The 1 lb. per foot is pretty good for a plow, or CQR type, however, Fortress anchors will only require half that or less. I have a 53MY with a 65 lb. CQR and an all rope rode. I like it a lot, and it has held in some big storm waves, but they're kind of expensive (like $900).

I also have a Fortress FX37 as my second anchor, which I believe weighs only 19 lbs. I have needed 2 anchors a number of times to keep the anchored boat out of trouble. Hinz' book shows official tests of anchor holding power that indicate Fortress anchors hold MUCH better in mud and sand than any other anchor type. However, these tests were done with a straight pull against the anchor, not with changing or reversing conditions. You'll get as many opinions as there are replys about what type anchor and what type of rode is best.

I just ordered a Lewmar Fast-Set 44 for my 43MY. I had one on my last boat and it worked great on the MS Gulf coast.

I have 2 Todd chairs on my f/bridge and I like them. You can purchase any height pedestal. I have also cut pedestals off and welded the piece I cut off onto another pedestals to get the required height. I'm going to replace the 10 ton Pompanette chair on the f/bridge with a new light weight Todd this spring. I can't see the cost difference just to have a Pompanette on the bridge. I don't have a show boat. When the chair weathers, I can junk the Todd and buy new one.

Hey T B- I had a hand me down Pompanette on a 44" quadrapod with a swivel. The chair was a nice fiberglass unit with a few minor cracks that we repaired and awlgripped. It was like new, but when the cushions started to go, I decided to get a new TODD. After much debate, I went to WM and bought the chair with cushions, got it home and was disappointed to see that it was polypropeline plastic and needed special anchors for the swivel fasteners etc.
Score is: Pompanette 10-Todd 3. I miss that old seat, plus it was a good 2-3 inches wider for the tush. I guess sometimes there is a quality issue I would love to buy your old one when the time comes. ws
