Yup, the Zeus drive is just a smaller version of the ones used on ships and tugs. I see no reason they couldnt make a bigger one to take 1200hp...they just haven't yet.
Just a guess, but my experience with mer-crap [lack of] engineering is that they want to use as much existing hardware as possible. So they probably modified an existing lower unit from the bravo XR drives or something to that nature.
All of the additional associated parts don't make sense to me in a recreational application. There may be a benefit in reduced fuel consumption, but all that crap that has to get maintained isn't worth it IMHO. The more components sitting outside the boat in saltwater, the worse off you are.
In a tug or a cruise ship or something that is running almost 24/7, the extra hardware can be worth it, but in a pleasure boat?
