Hatteras Model
37' CONVERTIBLE (1977 - 1982)
After a wonderful week out cruising the Gulf Islands here in the Pacific Northwest I was heading into my marina at a very low tide through a narrow channel ,at dead slow speed, and the starboard propeller hit a rock. I hauled the boat today and the tips of all four blades are damaged, so I pulled both props and they are in getting fixed. What I am really worried about, is when I hit the rock(s) the engine quit, I assume the prop momentarily jammed. How can I check if I have damaged my transmission, it seems to be working fine and the pressure is normal. Any ideas? Thanks Scott

Probably just stalled it. I would not worry - yet.

Most marine gears are pretty stout. I had some wind catch me in the
"Hon. Rev. Jesse" Jackson harbor here and grounded the back end of my Roamer on the rocks. It made a pretzel out of my starboard shaft. It actually bent the 1-3/8" shaft 20 degrees AFTER the strut. We limped home 15 miles at 1000 rpm and changed the shaft and the wheel. The Velvet drive is still going strong 15 years later!
I would however spin the shaft with a dial indicator to check for run out and then check the alignment when youre back together.
Your situation is primarily why stainless wheels arent too popular... the nibral stuff is more forgiving and can be better repaired, and is less prone to stress fatigue/cracks. ws

You're probably fine on the running gear. Hatts are built stout down there and if those are allison gears they are probably ok as well.

Now if they're ZF boxes, well, let's just say I've seen more than one exploded (yes, literally) case - they're made of ALUMINUM!

GO abck and see some threds of props bent and you'll fell beter...me included
