  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
46' CONVERTIBLE-Series II (1981 - 1984)
Got a little time waiting for my reworked props thought I would clean up the running gear a bit has any one used a product called prop speed to coat running gear, warm water in the keys EVERYTHING grows, thinking about using it on my swim platform stainless brackets too
thanks!

Prop speed had been used on my boat before I bought it. It was last painted about 3 years before I got bought the boat. The props and running gear were clear of any growth at all. I would highly recommend it.

The prior owner used it in salt water with good results. Now that she's in fresh it's not needed.

It depends".. first it's expensive but if you operate in shallow water (Bahamas, keys...) you will strip mud or sand and the prop speed will wear out quickly. Monthly diver clean up takes care of the growth...

It lasted three northeast years and 550 hours or running for me.

As I'm sure you have, I read dozens of threads on various forums, trying to pick the best running gear treatment. I concluded that they all give variable results based on a complex set of variables. There are cases for all of them lasting multiple years, but an equal number of casss for all of them lasting only a year. Based on that, I chose what might be the cheapest alternative, 2 coats of Pettit Barnacle Buster with 2 coats of Pettit Eco Bond on top (following thorough burnishing). My diver went down a couple of weeks ago, and reported the gear clean. It's only been 4 months, but my bay boat, tied next to the MY for 5 weeks while my dock extension was built, was covered in barnacles. Summer, of course, will be the acid test.

I have used it with good results. Seems to last about 2 years in our south Florida/ keys/ Bahamas use. I have been hearing about a competing product from a company named Glidecoat that may be a less expensive alternative but I haven't tried it yet.

There are some varied growth issues in harbors not far apart. So results on a boat in a certain harbor may be much different in a another harbor.

Before using Prop Speed I had tried several other products , primers, epoxy, hard paint, and ablative. The Prop Speed did the best job, but it ain't cheap.

Some thing to consider if you use Prop Speed, follow the directions and use Prop Speed's prep. It makes a difference.

Also from my experience paints containing copper, many bottom paints, without a barrier from the metal do a poor job.

For a couple of years I coted port and starboard with different products and had about the same result.

Agree; I recall several comments about the importance of prep with Prop Speed. After laying out several hundred bucks, makes sense to follow their directions. Given the high variability of reported results, made sense to me to start with the cheapest and work my way up.

"Starting with the cheapest and working way up" that is likely the boating story of many and that how I wound up with Prop Speed, and other things.

Ive been using prop speed on all of my boats for the last 5 or 6 years. Usually lasts 2 years here in the Northern Gulf. It is pricey but has worked way better than any other option i have tried. Following the directions for prop speed is very critical in my experience. I love the product but hate the price tag. It is worth the cost for me.

If I remember, I'll report on the combo I put on at the end of summer.

I used prop speed once. Found it to be cheaper to use a dive service once a month.
If the boat is up give it a try I found you still need the diver to clean the hull>
Good Luck

This is Prop Speed after almost 2 years. The boat was only run 25 hours in that time. To me it seems to work good if you run regularly at a high speed. If you run slow or not much at all its not worth the time or price IMA.

Here in the North East it has worked well for me getting three years for one application . It is crucial to follow directions or it will only last one year. Don't ask how I know!
