  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
36' CONVERTIBLE-Series II (1983 - 1987)
All,

I am looking for a professional captain to run my hurricane Sandy damaged boat from Sandy Hook, NJ to Slane Marine in HighPoint, NC. I'm still dealing with insurance and need to document the cost prior to making arrangement's but I'm looking to do this soon. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Tom

Since Slane's is inland, you might call Miami Cradle and talk to Charley, I think it is, the owner. Might be easier to just ship the boat overland. Tom has his contact info. Or, run the boat to NC by water, and then to HP overland. But since this is a relatively small Hatteras, trucking it might be the way to go. Miami Cradle moved my Hatteras to Slane's and did a great job.

Bruce Morrison just did a similar trip for another listee and he was very satisfied. A quick search should bring up the thread. If not mistaken it was for peterk?

Capt. Mark Praschak 410-490-0451 captmark435@atlanticbb.net I would trust Mark to run any boat anywhere. Send him an email and he will give you a quote.

I need to call Tom Slane Monday and find out if the route from the nearest water to his facility has any bridges. I am trying to avoid removing the flybridge. If I truck it from NJ the bridge will have to come off at a considerable charge greater than the cost of a captain running the boat down. Thanks for your help so far.

Dr. Jim's Series I 36C went down the highway with it's flybridge on. I know this because I saw it on I-95 the day it shipped, traveling in the opposite direction. With props and rudders off, and rails and FB windshield off, she may get low enough. I'm sure that Tom Slane will know. He does this stuff all the time.

Thanks for the heads up on that. Tom and I talked on Wednesday and he asked me to measure to the top of the bridge assuming I take the SS rails off. We are going to review the numbers but I think I was close to 14' and thought it had to be under 13'. I hope it can run down the road as is then it would make my life a lot easier. God knows with all the other damage I am dealing with I sure could use something to go easy.

13'6" is the standard without overweight permits. Oversize loads in both height and width can be hauled and the sizes depend on the routes. A good hauler will know what can be done.

Good luck with this. We got my boat's height down low enough by removing the antennas and windscreen etc. Yours may be a similar height, I hope so. Miami Cradle's truck is very close to the pavement, virtually all the height was the boat herself.

Tom,
What's the extent of the damage? Is the boat OK to run on her own power and bottom? Running south right now can be a bit tricky but doable. A lot of marinas along the Jersey Shore are closed do to damage and season. Will you be able to run at cruise speeds and what is your range? How far can you make it without refueling. I don't think you'll have a problem in Cape May or Ocean City MD but doubt there's much available North of that. Can you get fuel in the Highlands or are they all out of commission? Good luck and let me know if I can help. Tom will have a lot of good info for you and can recommend the right captain for you. He's had boats delivered that were in pretty rough shape. If yours has a lot of damage I would think you want a captain who knows how to deal with a boat that's got issues.

Yes, Bruce did deliver our boat. He would also know very quickly if the damage presented any issues for taking her down on her own bottom.
