Just recently a guy at WM said that muratic acid will disolve the residual zinc remains that are found clinging inside "pencil zinc" brass plugs (the inside and outside threaded type).

Has anybody done this - without harm to the brass - and if so would you dilute the acid?

(I'd prefer to do this and continue to use the plugs from my fine and growing collection of same).

For that matter what can you soak in muratic acid to get it cleaned?

It'll work. You will get some leaching of the brass alloy as evidenced by it turning pink in spots. I don't think it will harm anything but I gotta ask - Why bother?

Those plugs are cheap and playing with muriatic acid poses unnecessary risks.

I do it all the time its no big deal with the acid. People use acid all the time just wear gloves and glasses and oh yeah don't drink it. :p

Cause I'm cheap, and got lot's of plugs. Also got rubber gloves and acid too. :o

Buy new plugs with zincs and keep the old ones for PLUGS. Ya never know when you need a 1/4 brass HEX plug and have to take the 1 hour trip to the hardware store for a stupid square head plug (plumbers part!) that will round off with a
knucklebuster. ws
