The more fuel you run through them the faster they ware out plain and simple. Certain manufacturers recommend a higher rpm cruise, it all depends on the design. Yanmar spin fast, some Volvos spin fast, most others utilize a slower rpm. Detroit Diesel (old style) is unique in as much as they are two cycle, they fire on every compression stroke, so in essence they work twice as hard as a four cycle diesel. Detroits need to be run up frequently as they will not maintain proper running temperature if loafed for too long a period of time, which leads to compression ring fouling.
