FWIW,

I have a Manitowoc QM 45 which works fine but I never use it. It is not portable but its not a commercial monster either. Check out the link for stats on size and weight. It fits perfectly in a little nook to the right of the refrigerator on my Hat. Here is the link from the manufacturer. The boat is in Miami and I am happy to demo it. It is probably 5 years old and works well and is in cosmetically very good condition. Like I said, never used by me. Asking price 800, (Looked on the Web for comps.)

FWIW,

In support of the Air in the ice question, I watched a program about using ice as a lens to start survival fires (yes, cable TV can be a dangerous thing) and clear ice was preferable because it focused light better. The trick to get clear ice was to remove the air. Agitation during freezing or boiling were the methods used. Ice sculpturors also covet clear ice and use similar techniques. Like I said, FWIW.

It's been a couple of weeks...DON'T buy the icemaker I bought - http://www.air-conditioner-home.com/AI-210SS-ice-maker/?ref=froogle

Half the time it quits working for no apparent reason. It's a PITA. Then, if you disconnect the power for 10-15 minutes it will start working for a while but then it quits. I haven't figured out why. hmm, maybe I have...it's Chinese, like virtually everything else from plumbing fittings to pipe wrenches. DON"T buy one! :(

Warranty?

I can return it to Amazon for a full refund and they pay the shipping back. That is, I COULD have done that if I had kept all the original packing/box. But I tossed it immediately after setting up the ice maker and seeing that it worked properly. It worked great for the first week. There is a regular "warranty" from the factory as well so I'll look into that though I'm not confident it will mean much of anything...

So if you order any appliance from Amazon, be sure to keep the packing for the full 30 day period so you can return it at no cost... ;)

Use American Express...they have a built in warranty program.

Actually, AMEX is the only card we use unless the store/seller doesn't accept it. That's a good reminder and I had totally forgotten about it. Thanks, K!

Update again. The icemaker works flawlessly now. About a month ago I found the problem was that the water feed hose from the tank to the pump was kinked so it didn't feed properly. Obviously that shouldn't happen at all so I'm not sure I'd recommend it even though if it occurs, the fix is easy. OTOH it works really well now and I'm very pleased with it.
