My port engine tends to smoke on cold startup. It does clear up after a bit. The engine was rebuilt at about 1,500 hrs. according to the mechanic who did it, but that was a while ago. He doesn't remember all that was done. He just remembers rebuilding it (the downside of getting old) Currently the engines have around 2,500 hrs. The former owner's mechanic (not the rebuilder) used to come and start the engines for the owner (in his 90's) before the sale to me. He said that the engine always smoked on startup but not to worry. So, question is, should I be concerned at all? My teaching captain (this is my first dual engine boat) suggested that the cause was injector fuel leakdown into the cylinders that gets burned on startup. Any thoughts? And if this is so, does it cause an issue with the engine oil?
