  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
My port engine tends to smoke on cold startup. It does clear up after a bit. The engine was rebuilt at about 1,500 hrs. according to the mechanic who did it, but that was a while ago. He doesn't remember all that was done. He just remembers rebuilding it (the downside of getting old) Currently the engines have around 2,500 hrs. The former owner's mechanic (not the rebuilder) used to come and start the engines for the owner (in his 90's) before the sale to me. He said that the engine always smoked on startup but not to worry. So, question is, should I be concerned at all? My teaching captain (this is my first dual engine boat) suggested that the cause was injector fuel leakdown into the cylinders that gets burned on startup. Any thoughts? And if this is so, does it cause an issue with the engine oil?

How cold? Where are you located. I have 8-92's that start instantly with a tiny light 1 second puff and that's it. This is in Florida. In the coldest winter months I need the block heaters or I get more cranking and smoke. It clears pretty quick. So if you're in a northern climate, it's something to consider.

What color is the smoke. It will be hard to determine white, grey, blue or dark grey but these are important. If you are really brave, what I did when I was young and stupid,,,,
Put your face in that smoke and take a whiff,, eyes open. You can smell / taste the diesel or oil burning. If your eyes burn It's un-burned fuel. Now from this,, I think we can help.

The good news, 92s are historically slobs. Usually the injectors will dribble/drool some fuel when not running.
If it clears up quickly and stays clear thru the day, This would be my first assumption.
A better injector shop can tighten up these injectors but till it is an issue, (sheen on the water, complainants of the smoke, burning eyes while trolling) let it go.
As my pop used to say "Run em till the wheels fall off". Think that meant trucks but may still apply here...

Look forward to a better smoke color report and if anybody got their face down there....

Yes, good thread. Kind of repeats what I said in a very long format.

Everything wrong with this forum in two sentences.

There's a tremendous amount of practical experience available amongst our members. Actual professionals in the field, who have been fixing these problems for years. Sadly, it all gets run over by the people who write novels about things with which they have very limited practical experience. But they wrote a novel, so they must know best.

I guess it's the internet in general. Plausible Bull$#it wins the unknowing because it sounds good.

But he was an inter web educated exspurt.

Regarding smoke, it is white smoke on startup. It clears fairly rapidly. Was noticed by one of my guests. I am reading all of the posts on this issue. There's a lot to digest!

what power do you have? how often does the vessel get out of the slip? how old is the fuel? any additives in the fuel?

8v71-N's, Seldom right now, as I am still learning to handle her and working with a captain, Fuel age? A some old, some newish mix. As far as additives, don't know but probably none.
