placement of check valve

Having next to zero plumbing knowledge, is it bad practice to place a check valve on my water pump outlet?

Background: Checking my potable water pump and the Quest pipe compression fitting blew. In fixing, bought the wrong size nipple for an elbow and can't tie it back into the PEX. Found the fittings on both ends of the check valve will work but I would have to mount the valve to the pump outlet. Is there a specified distance this valve should be from the pump? I ask as the existing was a seeming bizarre arrangement with lots of seemingly needless pipe and fittings.

It's not uncommon at all. Can help keep back pressure off when hooked to shore water, though there is likely one somewhere between pump and shore somewhere already. Also handy if you have two pumps, for the same reason.

Actually I plan to re-use the existing valve, as opposed to use a Shark Bite check valve. I checked the old one (no pun intended) and it works fine. I'm asking if it must be placed on the water line a specified distance from the pump or can be screwed directly to the pump outlet.

I have a Shark Bite one on hand and had bought it for hooking up a second 24 volt pump for while on the hook.
