  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' CONVERTIBLE (1969 - 1980)
I have had problems with the Panish engine controls from day one on the boat. Very difficult to find neutral as the “indents” are not very noticeable. There is also an old engine synchroniser that has been faulty right from the start and I have given up using it as sometimes after using it, the Port engine will not engage after I bring the boat to neutral while fishing, after a hook up etc. The synchroniser works off the stbd engine control.
We were out deep sea fishing yesterday and the starboard engine would not go into idle or reverse. I even tried turning the synchroniser on and off to see if it was the problem.
I left the stbd engine running to get us home on 2 engines. While we were motoring back to home the starboard engine was revving much higher than the port.

Finally when we came to anchoring, I had to turn of the stbd engine as it would not come out of gear. I went down to the engine room to the starboard engine and found the nut on the control cable was completely loose on the cable. I tightened it enough and adjusted it enough to get it to take the engine out of gear and into reverse. But it still needs to be adjusted.
Now I find the PORT engine will only go into forward gear after a delay or until I push the revs higher. Why would the port engine be affected by adjusting the starboard cable?
What is the best way to adjust the cables so I can get into and out of gear easier?
Thanks

If you have Allison trannys check the oil level. A delay getting into FWD, of the need to bump RPM, is a classic sign of low pressure caused by low oil level

Hi Pascal,
Thanks for the response. The low oil pressure alarm to the Port transmission did go ON when I started the engine. I immediately went to the ER and checked the transmission oil level and it was FULL. However, we had run at hull speed for 9 plus hours trolling, so the oil was warm.
Also BTW, I have just changed the oil in both the Engines and Transmissions.
When I started the engines this morning, no alarms came on.
I will be checking cables and connections tomorrow.

Check the screen on the tranny too. If the gasket leaks it can cause low pressure

And don't forget tranny level needs to be checked idling and warm

Hi Pascal,
Checked and oil is good at both warm and cool.
I believe it has to do with the way the Panish has been installed. I read through the manual which is very basic and I have got both stb and port controls working although the port still has too much delay and also finding neutral is by "feel" rather than indent. There has always been an issue with the synchroniser which works off the stbd control so I have a feeling this needs to be looked at.
