Is there special paint used for painting the radar? Mine is looking kind of bad and I want to paint it. There is a blue area that has "FURUNO" labeled in it that looks especially bad. I have never had to do this, but I would imagine that some paints could affect it. I would love to be able to use some sort of spray paint.

:p To avoid the "paint question" I covered the area on my old radar with blue vinyl and had vinyl letters overlaid on that with the boat name.

Made it real easy to get back to the right boat after a few mudslides!

It's OK to paint the radar.Just don't use any paint with any matalic base.Bill

So to clarify, a standard Krylon spraypaint would be ok?

I like the Idea of puting my boat name in the radar

If you are going to paint it back with the blue, be very careful with a spray can - you will darn near have to wrap up the entire boat to keep from getting overspray on her! Been there... I like the idea of the vinyl with letters that you just peel off and stick on like a transom name. Looks great.

Regarding the Krylon Paint.
1. As was said, you gotta tape everything off, or it's paint all over the place (lol)
2. Please make sure you read the label on the can!!! Any metallic component to the paint at all, and you fry your RADAR first time you switch it on.

PS: No I didn't do it but saw a friend do it and couldn't get to him fast enough to stop him from hitting the switch. Forget what paint he used though.

I like the vinyl Idea too, but the entire radar is looking ruff. I need to do some sort of maintnance to keep it looking good. I dont want it to get out of hand.

Have you tried a cleaner wax to remove the oxidation? If that works, then you could just get the vinyl for the face.

I did not try that, but I guess I will. Wont hurt anything to try.

I used the fiberglass restorer / wax on mine. Came out like new. 3M product available anywhere
