have a yamaha 9.9 manual 2 stroke. had it serviced before last weekend and had a new recoil rope installed. lasted 5 pulls before it ended up in my hand, rope and all. they have had it all week and now inform me they can't get to it until monday. i am outboard ignorant and want to take it back and do it myself tonight. how complicated is replacing the cord and what are the steps involved?

thanks,

jim

If similar to other units, it should not be all that bad. Usually 3-5 screws hold the rope/starter recoil unit in place. When you pull the rope, centrifigal force causes palls to throw out and catch on the motor, turning it over. When it starts, you release the rope, the palls pull back in, and the spring loaded unit pulls the rope back in. Pretty simple (I think)...

Pull the spring loaded rope retrieval unit off the motor, from which the rope freed itself (yearning to breath free). Usually a small knot on the end of the rope is inserted into a small insertion location. You may or may not have room to wind the rope around the spring driven return. If no room (should be tho), then the spring drive will need to be rotated to maximum, the rope inserted and allow the spring drive to pull the rope back in.

My W-A guess...

take a digital pic or two of it and I can most likely walk you through the process. They are all different, but bascailly the same :)

thanks guys, i decided to let them fix their screw up. we went out for the weekend and rowed it around instead.
