Hatteras Model
Not Currently A Hatteras Owner
Yanked the 4 8V batteries (one with a bad cell) out today. They actually were not as heavy as I thought they would be, which means there's less lead in there which means they were not the best and that's why they only lasted 4 years. (Plus the murderous charging profile compliments of the Sentry) Brand was Marine Master, which is Deka, the 8V195 model. Little hoist came in handy to get them out of the hole. I was able to muscle them up the stairs and on to the dock.

There was battery fluid in the box with the bad cell. Lots of baking soda.

The replacements are in, 60 pounds each they are manageable, and all together should give me all the power I need. (On that side.) All I got to do in the morning is make some cables to tie it all together.

I dread the day I'll have to drag 8 of those out from outside the port engine.

All four of mine are only a year old. BUT one cracked two weeks ago. My old self can't lift them anymore. Asked a kid on the dock if he could lend a hand. He goes down and picks it up like it weighs 10 lbs, carries it up out of the engine room and onto the dock. Then does the same with the replacement. Ah to be young again.

Ah, but did you have “old man money” at the kids age? Not to brag (of course I’m braggging!) I still do 50lb bicep curls per arm, at 68 yro, but I no longer can bench press six 45lb plates.

Be careful. You can build and maintain the muscles but the tendons are high mileage no matter what you do......

10 years ago I used to replace 8Ds alone... now struggling with 4Ds :(.

Wow, look at those Rolls! A big upgrade from the Marine Masters.

I'm down to D's and not looking forward to the AA stage.

Yes..... So when I got home I put the MM's on the scale and they are 90 pounds. So the size of two of the Rolls', they weigh only 50% more....... I have a lot more confidence in the Rolls now.

I used that same amazon winch when replacing the 4 x Rolls 8D's on my boat after 10 years (they were still good, I was just getting nervous as no battery usually last 10 years). 10 years ago we did by hand. IMG_2243.webpIMG_2046.webpIMG_2043.webp

I replaced six of my MM’s last year and two this year. Four I had help with the others I did by hand, alone. Wasn’t too bad, hardest part was getting up and down the stairs with 100lbs of lead in your arms.

It's great after 10 years it's absolutely functioning well

So glad he posted the hoist picture. Tony, when you get to that point just remember I have to hoist 2 of those out of my generator room under the galley. Right now I only have 2 to remove - other 2 are only working batteries on the boat.

Oscar, what did you use as a support bar to hold up your hoist? I am going to have to do same thing to get 2 dead 8D's out of my generator room.

It is a 1-1/2" or so solid aluminum rod. Black (gas) pipe will work too. Also used a couple of pieces of 2x8 about a foot long. Placed a folded shop towel 4 or so layers thick between the rod and the blocks to keep it from rolling.

And after some quality time making cables they are up and running. Pretty happy with this.

Did anyone consider lithium ?

LiFePo is not for starting. Standard lithium ion like tesla uses burns like a torch.

The cables are certainly all red (problem) with that is not meeting abyc or cg specifications .

Also what size cable is that? It's not 4/0 from the looks of it. I'd not use anything smaller for those. The runs are pretty long and the draw is immense.

It's on the radar..... Steep learning curve but making progress. Still bringing cost down.
