Hatteras Model
36' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1969 -1977)
I've decided for no particular reason to get my 6 pack license and don't feel like sitting in class. Does anyone have online course recommendations?

Boat US has a discount on the Captain in a Box system..

I've seen this, do you know of anyone that has tried it?

Guess I need to look into one of these. My renewal comes up next year and for the first time in almost 40 years I won't make the sea service time requirement.

Once my dive boats gone i'm letting mine lapse. Between the renewals and twic and the garbage the CG can put you through whenever they want i can do without it. If you have no need for it why bother? It really means nothing more then you passed a goverment test and have been on the water. I know plenty of people that have a tonnage ticket that haven't even run a boat for any amount of time. Never helped me on insurance all's the agent ask's is ever taken a safe boating course? I know it's just my opinion but if you don't need it why bother? Bill (100 Gt, sixth renewal coming up)

X10

when I was about to test for my 100 ton (Ocean operator) way back when my father's insurance agent explained the liability and cost of insuring myself . I have never needed it as I dont intend to carry passengers for hire. One time in 30 years I needed a license to satisfy an insurance company so I hired a captain with a new 50 ton ticket. I even let him run the boat but he was not comfortable docking it so I did it.

add in the bs from juan and jose at twic to look into m y patriotism and im over it forever

The whole process is a lot more complex and costly than just the course and test. You need to apply for a TWIC, get a drug test, a medical, first aid course... By the time you re done it s $1500

If you really need it or are going to use it, then fine otherwise it s a waste of time and money. You can do deliveries without a license for instance as long as the insurer is ok with your experience.

If you have been boating for a while and care about it, you probably will not learn much from the course anyway, it s all very basic stuff

A buddy of mine needs to obtain the license for work, I thought I'd get mine also just for something to do. Guess I'm looking forward to some day running a boat full time. I know what you mean about some these so called captains around the docks, most of them I wouldn't loan my kayaks to.

The FAA already makes me jump thru most those hoops so its pretty much just prep and the test. Plus we never know if someday our wonderful government might change the requirements and make the license much more difficult to obtain. Current certificate holders would hopefully be grandfathered.

I did my 6th renewal last year. Unless it has changed, you do not need to renew your TWIC as long as you do not need to get into secure area's. Just the Sea time, physical and the fee.

Port canaveral is a secure area. We pass through it every time we head out. Every captain I know here needs the twic crap.

I let my license expire about 5 yrs ago after 30 yrs as I wasn't using it and all the crap involved when I looked into it...
Now that I'm working part time by the city marina there are a lot of times I could use it... But after checking out what I'ld have to go thru to get a new one (starting from step one), I said 'forget it"

I have a question. I had my 1st issue in 1982 (100 ton O/O). However, I let it lapse some years ago. My wife and I use our boat for our ministry whereby we take church groups, church leaders, youth groups and so forth out to fish free of charge. I have had some people tell me I should renew my ticket but I really cannot see the benefit in that. We never charge to take people out, never. We do not ask for fuel money and we even feed our passengers. Although we accept donations my wife and I are the major donors! But that is ok it is a huge blessing for us and we love it. There is nothing like seeing the excitement of people who are out on the water for the first time or who catch their first fish!

Does anyone see the utility in me going back to get my ticket once again just because we are a nonprofit?

John

How do the rest of the boaters get through?

Not that I have not been held at gunpoint but thats another story. Im not sure about the twic issue except that everyone bitches about needing to get it updated. I can not get to certain areas in the port that are secure. If I leave the channel a navy or cg boat runs over to "visit"
