Boat US has a new abbreviated story on their website telling of the evils of ethanol. Nothing really new, but Boat US is sounding a little more strident on this subject. Haven't seen the printed version, but it has apparently affected a certain U.S. congressman adversely.

My surveyor told me to install the latest Racor type filters for this problem. if ethanol reaches south Fla. i may have to change tanks. Might go bladder type maybe?
 
this new and sudden craze for ethanol is just plain silly. there is an interesting article on CNN today about how it is now pushing up the price of corn, sugar and other commodities and could very soon create some serious problems...
 
Yep, you got it Pascal. If the refiners are short and need to import E that will drive up the cost for any engine using gasoline. And I had a thought - say they leave boats alone for some strange reason, it would then be a "different" fuel and justification for outragous marine gasoline prices....

But what do I know...
 
You may be on to something, Mike. Just don't let the refiners and markets know that there is a niche like that or they might just do it. Of course, even an outrageous price for pure gasoline might still be cheaper in the long run than replacing tanks and maybe even motors.

Noticed the gas at the Chicago City fuel dock was right at $4.00 a gallon (on my way to Michigan City to refuel) That's pretty special already!

Seriously though, I'd happily pay more if I could get the good old stuff. Ultimately, I don't think there will be any way to avoid ethanol as a substitute for MTBE, which is being banned in many locations. The article innacurately implies that the 10% ethanol level is due to the removal of the MTBE. In fact that is a 3-4% formulation change.
 
Ethanol is way stupid. These old carburated engines will run way lean, our tanks will be affected, and where are they gonna find the corn and other sugar based products to fill the demand. Bah, someone has their head up their, oh well, you know where I mean. One thing that would help all gasoline producers is a national standard on additives and one grade, say 89 octane. We have absolutely no need for three grades of gasoline for cars or boats. How stupid is that. I don't know the answer to all these problems, but Etanol sure isn't one of them.
 
Write your elected officials and demand a national energy policy NOW! Make sure you tell them that we will not be dazzled by hollow promises. We expect a coherent plan that makes maximum use of existing resources (shale oil, drilling the gulf before the chinese do it), tell them that just like garbage dumps and prisons, oil refineries have to go somewhere, so make exemptions that the tree huggers cannot block. Provide a level playing field for the makers of biodiesel, tax advantages should be equal for all new technologies. Ask them why we have a long term highway plan, but no long term energy plan? Industry will not invest in developing solutions if their investments will be stripped away due to willy nilly whims of congress or the next administration. The last time this happened was during Jimmy Carter's administration. The shale oil industry got beat up by the environmentalists and cheap foriegn oil prices, I doubt anyone would invest in this again without assurances. Same goes for any new technology. We need a long term national energy policy, we cannot afford to go from one 4 year administration to the next, the Japanese had an 40 year economic plan after WWII that they followed to a "T" and picked off one industry after another until they kicked our ass. How many TVs do we make here now, look at electronics, my point exactly. We need a national strategy (war plan) for energy, that will kick foriegn oil's ass, and make us independent. We need to start now, we do not have the luxury to wait for "Pie In the Sky" stuff like hydrogen and fuel cells.
 
Along those lines, I must tell you guys that you don't want them to market a seperate gas or diesel fuel for marine use. Aviation gas is called 100LL. Translated that says 100 octane low lead. Our airplane engines need the lead to lubricate the valve stems. This stuff is called a "botique fuel" by refineries and man do we pay for it. I have seen 100LL as high as $5.60/ gallon. Lowest price is $3.55. Jet fuel is the same as #1 diesel fuel which I use in my truck in winter. The US govt. is subsidising the Ethanol industry so we can have that crap without paying more at the automotive pumps. Wait until they stop the subsidy. IMHO ethanol, or any alcahol is really a dumb thing to add to gas or diesel. It has 1/2 the BTUs, has a great infinity to absorb water, and, of course, screws up our tanks in boats.
 
All good points, Maynard. But I would gladly pay more for fuel than to have to tear up my boat to change tanks. If the politicians would quit messing around and let the market work, we would have the right fuel at the right price for our boats. It's amazing how well a competitive market will work on it's own without intervention from someone who thinks they know better.
 
Sounds like once again the free market is always what makes the most sense. In this very relevant example, you've got two compelling reasons why ethanol blended into gasoline would not work: 1) without gov't subsidies it wouldn't be price competitive enough, and 2) it's putting upward pressure on the feed crops that consumers need in the grocery store at reasonable prices -- anybody complain lately think their grocery produce bill is TOO LOW?

If EVER there is a reason for subsidies of any kind (and I've yet to see one that I could get my head behind), it's got to be for a very short term adjustment to a new harsh marketplace reality that is somehow deemed to be a vital national interest. Sorry, but the way ethanol is being handled here just doesn't meet that criteria for me.
