No question the 54 is a better boat also more fuel burn, higher dockage, insurance cost, taxes the cost is more. You can have basically a new 45 with the repower and upgrades.
Good Luck

Thank you for your thoughtful replies.

Regarding the repower with QSM 11's on the 45 platform, when is too much...too much ?

The QSM is an 11 liter motor (661 ci) and is offered in different power configurations up to 715 hp.
Is the 715 hp version pushing the weight to hp ratio too far ? The older Detroits were not originally designed to put out as much hp as Covington et al has managed to wring out of them and it is well understood that the motors suffer shorter service life at the higher hp ratings and weight to hp ratios greater than 1:1.

What is the upper limit that I should look for ? They are offered in 455 / 610 / 645 /670 and 715 hp.

Also, I dont understand all that well what the difference is between the physical motors lets say
comparing the 610 to the 715 hp ? Is it just the injectors ? Or is there other more robust systems on the higher hp versions ?

Thank you for any help,

Greg

Greg,

Just saw your post- ambitious list and I agree with Jim that Slane Marine may be a yard to seriously consider for this work.

I'm reading this from the perspective of having bought a project boat and gotten through most of a refit over the course of the past 3 years, much through a sweat equity framework.

Reacting to your statement: "While the boat is in for the repower, I would like to have numerous other details attended to."

This is expensive especially when hiring out.

I just gotta ask-- ARE YOU SINGLE?

Really I'm just giving you the business. Best of luck with your project, and more "power" to you!

Enjoy-

Different hp on some is a "tune" and on others different components. Speak to your engine supplier about these options. We have our mechanic spend time with customers explaining the differences in detail.

It used to be the rule that the more you squeezed out of a diesel engine in the way of hp and torque, the shorter the lifespan of said engine would be. I think that rule still holds- it would make sense if it did, wouldn't it?- but modern common-rail diesels with electronic engine controls have much better control of injector spray patterns and timing. That said, I would not buy the highest-option engine in the M11 range. I think 650 hp or similar is going to get you plenty of speed.

M11s are also available in the Cummins Recon program at significant cost savings, and they are warranteed by Cummins. Look into those.

With 645 hp engines, you would probably have a thirty-knot cruise if you wanted to use it. At 25 knots, though, you would burn far less fuel, etc...you know the deal, YMMV.

Search on my name in both the threads here and in the pictures area. did all you are asking for.
we should discuss if you like. I put in the C-12's, bridge work, etc. As far as the refit other then engines, I had Jarrett Bay do exactly what you are asking for, windows, sofa, etc back in 2009. Speak with Jeff Fulcher as he managed my job and you can see pictures on my threads as well in the pictures area. I deleted many as my allowance was up. Mention the boat Polarizer as he will remember.

My C-12's allow my boat to cruise at 27-28 knots at 1900 RPM and 45 gph etc. I have all the information you may need. The QSM's are equally a good choice and may cost less with out much sacrifice to spped from what I have read about over the years.

See Polarizer listed on the JB website as well

in 2005 the repower with QSM11 660hp with trans cost $150,000. @ Jarrett Bay. $106,000. was the quote price for the engines and ZF trans. with elect. controls.
Good Luck

2004 with the C-12's was in the same ball park, trans controls etc. Dont remember the engine cost. there are lots of other peripheral things you will want to do as well. I removed my sea strainers in favor of hull strainers. got rid of the glendinning as the cat has its own synchronizer. All parts removed, I sold on this website as well. I put in larger shafts to 2 3/4", board out original struts etc.

Do you mean 2 1/4" shafts? 2 3/4" would seem big unless you have real deep reduction gears. I was curious as to what you guys did about the running gear since the standard 2" stuff would require very shallow reduction gears and still be tight on the safety margins.

I used 1.48 gears with the 2" shafts
Good Luck
