The GC82 and 83 also work on T-Mobile's service, and its a LOT cheaper.

Check into it. No real kinks to speak of and if you have a Windows machine you can actually have it distribute the signal via Wifi as an ad-hoc network!

If you do come back in on one engine, do you have to lock down the other prop so it won't spin the marine gear underway and damage it?

Mike - the Sony GC 83 cellular card in the laptop coupled to Cingular Data Service is how we get online wirelessly from the boat. I've also installed one of Digital Antenna's wireless cell phone repeaters that boosts the signal. Still working out software kinks , but it works quite well. I've got more info if anyone needs it

I put the Digital Antenna DA4000MR amplifier and repeater on my 53MY. It installed fine and I get the green light on the unit, but I can't see that it makes any difference! In fact, when I was in the middle of Lake Michigan, 20 miles from shore and dead calm waves, my regular cell phone was going back and forth between searching and finding a "one bar" signal. When I switched the DA4000MR on and off, no difference! I'm wondering if there's any way to see if this system actually works.

I would if its any significant distance, yes.

Nonchalant 1 - I have not used it enough yet to tell. It seems that the quality of the signal is better , i.e. it sounds as though there is less interferance and noise on the phone now than before. As far as signal boost goes I have not tried switching it off and on . I will just to see . DA says that if there is no signal it will not bring one in , it can only amplify a weak signal.
