I'm about to leave the marina, driving to DC to HOPEFULLY get a new passport issued while I wait.

I was supposed to go back to Mexico a week ago but the day before my flight I discovered that my passport had expired several weeks after arriving here in late April.

After several panic sessions and much cursing I found out that a regional passport office (there's one in DC) is supposed to be able to issue a passport immediately if you have proof of international travel within less than 2 weeks. The first opening for an appointment to do so was this morning. Of course I had to cancel my Jun 17 airline reservation and now have one for this Sat.

Here's hoping the gov can actually deliver on the "immediate" issue thing. I'd really hate to extend my stay again. Though I guess there are worse things than being "stuck" in ones own country. ;)

It works. I've done it before and so have others that I know. I had a friend of mine miss his flight because he didn't realize his passport expired. He found out when he tried to go through customs at the airport. The customs officer gave him an emergency number to call and he was able to get his passport the next day. This happened on a Friday morning and he was able to get an appointment that Saturday AM. He was on a flight later that evening. If he missed that conference he probably would have lost his job. Sometimes the government actually works. I'm sure the fact that he worked for AT&T and was responsible for all US call routing worldwide had something to do with it. This meeting was an annual meeting where all the major phone systems make arrangements on routing during high volume days through out the year.

It works. Unless your picture is sill posted on the wall (and even then i wonder...)

Naomi had that happen right before a charter to the Bahamas, she got an appointment and i wrote an employer letter on the boat letterhead since there was no plane ticket. Issued rightvaway

I did all the processing and now I'm sitting in a bar across the street. They said the pp will be ready in an hour!

Re being "stuck" on the boat, I know it sounds silly but I really miss the admiral and dont like being separated from her this long - over a month now.

You still sitting at the bar Mike? :)

Got the PP about an hour later and all's well.

One thing I found a bit ironic is that a passport is not an acceptable "photo ID" to get a passport! One would think that there is no better ID around and that's true for everything EXCEPT getting a passport. To do that you need any other photo ID - driver's license, work ID, etc.
