Northern Lights/Alaska Diesel Electric used to publish a very good video about generator installation, which I am sure is now a DVD, called "Don't Drown Me". It had a lot of useful information about waterlift muffler placement and how to avoid getting water back into the diesel through the exhaust system. You used to be able to get it via NL dealers- they may even have it on line as a download by now.

I've had good luck with my NL. I think Westerbeke and Norpro are fine, too. I just wish the sound shield had fit in my boat- even though we moved the genset, it wouldn't go in there. They do make a BIG difference. It's bearable, but it could be quieter.

I took the sound shields off ours I just don't like not being able to see it. I had some sound blankets made up and hung them up around the unit. Almost as efective as the sound shield with good acces and ventilation!!!

one thing some NL/Luger has over the norpro is a gear driven raw water pump... although i've changed one impeller and one belt on my norpro is 2300 hrs and i recently replaced a water pump (leaky seal and loose bearing at 1700hrs) on one of the NL20 i have here "at the office"

Bob,
Did you replace a 7.5 kw Onan with the 9 kw Norpro? I forgot to get my measurements on my 7.5 kw onan and will not be going to the boat before heading to Boat Show. Is it a lot quieter than the Onan?
Thanks,
captbuddy

Don't recall the exact measurements, but the Norpro is slightly smaller in all three dimensions, so it will fit. I recall that the length had the biggest difference, a couple inches or so less. It is quieter than the Onan. I run it without a sound shield, and while you can hear it, it is not a nuisance. It is in my engine room under my salon (boat is 1979 43C).

Almost any new genny will be quieter than the old Onans...don't know why they are so noisy.

If you have the option select a gear riven raw water pump....much better than a belt. also, if the Norpro doesn't have an exhaust overheat shutdown sensor, you should be able to install one or have one installed without much trouble as long as you can connect into another temperature sensor circuit.

If I were installing a new genny, I'd POSTIVELY put in a raw water flow sensor...like AQUALARM..so the instant salt water is lost (and the sensor flap closes) bingo you get an audible alarm BEFORE any overheating takes place.....it's rather crazy to wait for any diesel engine to get hot before any feedback or shutdown occurs.....

Would 3,000 hours be considered high for a Norpor 12.5 KW that was installed in 2005?

I would say no. Especially if its got the Yanmar engine. I have seen those Yanmars go 25,000hrs + before rebuild.

The newer generators designs spend a lot more effort on the air intakes, and I think that is where the quitter operation is achieved. We just put in a Phasor with no sound shield and you have to be in the galley to hear it at all. Phasor uses the Kabota motor which also seems to have a good rep. So far we are happy with it. John

I have 3000 hrs on our norpro. Relatively trouble free...

I installed the Norpro 9kW in Aug of 2009. As of the beginning of the 2016 season I had 2162 hrs on it. The Yanmar engine has been flawless. The genny end crapped out this July. I was not impressed with Norpro's customer service. After 2 or 3 weeks of getting jerked around, I told them I was coming in to pick up my genny and take it elsewhere. That's when they finally got their behinds in gear.

Hi John,

Where did you get your Phasor from and who installed it in San Diego?

About 6 weeks ago, after hearing someone on this site mentioned norpro I decided to contact them to get info on purchasing a 15kw. I was told I would get a call back I never did. A few days later I called again and said I left a message and no one called me. I left another message yet again. A few days later I called a third time and spoke to the owner and stated my frustration and he took my info and said he would email me a quote for what I was looking for. I never got the quote They are 30 min from me and thought it would be nice that buy local and if I needed parts it would be easy. I'm not the type to bash a company but frustrated because I really wanted to use them.

it would be hard to believe that I could not be in the ball park quoting you a Kohler 15KW call me and i will give you a price.

Roger I will do that. My first choice was a Kohler. I have a 9kw on my other boat and have been very happy with it
