Hatteras Model
58' LRC (1975 - 1981)

The Admiral about had a heart attack when I pulled into the driveway with this last night.
I really need to start communicating better.....
And she didn't find it the least bit funny when I had to run up to WM before they closed to pick up some West Systems to start working on a few little spider cracks. Sure, they've probably been on the boat 20 years, but I wouldn't have been happy with a brand new Whaler that I could only admire and not tinker with!

Of course, it didn't help that my Amazon shipment of books about cruising New England arrived yesterday too!
"So we're really doing this 3-4 month sabbatical thing next summer, eh?!"

Anyone ever put a 17' Montauk on top of a 58' Hatt?

Great boat. We own a 1981 17' Montauk that is on its third engine that was used as a tender to our 53for several years, but we towed it due to its weight and size. I have looked at new Whalers, and in my opinion don't think the new ones are of the same quality and durability as the one you bought. Also, the older boats are prettier than the new ones when they are polished and shined up with nicely varnished brightwork. Suggest you watch your kidneys and dental work in even a light chop. Good luck with her.

My 43' came complete with a 13' Whaler (Admiral had the name "Ding A Ling" put on it ) that fits on the hardtop.... Have a blast with it... it too has a zillion spider cracks I plan on finally fixing this Fall... But the grandkids love riding in it and driving it.

I was half joking about transporting the Montauk on the big boat.
The expense involved in changing up the FB furniture and upgrading the davit really doesn't make sense.
Plus, we love our 14' RIB. It's like a go cart/bumper car all on one!

The resto on the Montauk will be fun and a great way to hone my skills with painting, teak work and minor glass repair. I'm really looking forward to it.

Jeff,

OBVIOUSLY you subscribe to my belief of "it's better to ask for forgiveness and to ask first"

Jeff, you will need some instructions on brushing and rolling AG. Feel free to call or email me. It will be great to watch someone else suffer for a change :)

Thanks Jim! I actually rolled and tipped the deck of the RIB this past winter (and sprayed the console). These are small enough that mistakes are easily correctable. Also, there's very little vertical surface, so runs are minimal. Of course, by the second coat, we learn most of the things to avoid.

Good call.

Looks like my family. A Hatteras, one 1986 13' Whaler Super Sport, and a 1999 18' Whaler Dauntless.

The kids use the 13 like crazy, but I still keep a RIB on the boat as a tender. We've towed the 13, but have yet to tow the 18 more that just a few miles up the lake.

The hell with rolling. Rent a storage garage for a month and spray it in there.

Its small enough to do it and will come out great. especially of you do some nice graphics
.

Good idea. I wish they made a storage garage big enough for my Hatteras. I actually did look into renting space to spray it, but I couldn't find it. Probably just as well; I would have used three times the paint, breathed some of it, and gotten the same result, more than likely.

Jim its actually less paint to spray and once prepped its a single application with no sanding in between. I would recommend the spraying be done by someone who does it daily because the professionals can get a smoother finish.
