New Starter Motor

The 32V CCR Delco MT50 on my port 12V71Ti was getting to be less than 100% reliable. It never failed, but sometimes require hammer therapy and multiple attempts to engage... so, I bought a new one and will have the old rebuilt and keep as a spare. But a big shout out and thanks to the folks at East Coast Battery and Electric in FLL. David took care of bidness at what I considered a very reasonable price.... now if 2 or three of you could show up to help install this 90lb beast, I'd appreciate it!

Definitely a two-man job. It helped me to loop two lines around the starter and then over the exhaust manifold. Then the pressure was off and you could get a little more access to line up the first bolt. Was scared it’d knock a hole in the bottom if dropped. Put down something soft if you’re butterfingers.

I'm fortunate to have a jib crane and winch in that ER. Running the cable between exhaust manifold ports.. but you hit exactly what I'm afraid of.. I've got enough room under my engine to work, but if something comes loose from my rigging... in done.. think this one is a checkbook job! I struggled just getting it to the ER.

it may help to screw a piece of threaded rod into one of the mounting holes so you can slide the starter on to it and then start the other bolts, then remove the threaded rod and put the mounting bolt in

What he said and make sure you use a new gasket. I had oil poured out of mine when a piece blew out of the gasket

I have an oil leak coming down from where the starter motor meets the Bell housing. Is this where the gasket mentioned is? I can’t imagine removing a 90lb starter, but do you think the bolts could be tightened and the leak reduced?

What would oil be doing in a bell housing ?

If you have Allison transmissions the bell housing is part of the of the gear set and the flywheel runs in the transmission oil. The forward clutch plate (when in gear/forward) presses up against the flywheel.

Perhaps I was not too clear.

There is oil appearing to run down from below where the flange of the starter motor bolts to the MG514 bell housing.

Its difficult to see as its on the inboard side. The leak may be from above the starter.

Just did this job myself. Wish I had thought to do the threaded rod trick. Good idea.

Gasket? What gasket? There was no gasket when I removed my starter on DD 671s. Have never had oil leak from either starter. Should there be a gasket where starter mounts to the engine?

What would oil be doing in a bell housing ?

Was wondering the same. Have Capitol Gear Box on DD 671s. Maybe they are talking about Allison's. There is no gasket between starter and bell housing on Capitols. I have no oil leaking.

No you do not, Capitol gears have no oil in that housing.

Thanks for all the advice. I've got 514c's and I'll be looking for a gasket and oil. Of course the old starter hasn't missed a beat since it's replacement showed up! If I can devise a sling rig I am confident in, I'll DIY it, but I just don't see a good attach point. Wish they had welded a lug on this thing. I'll use the stud idea if I don't hire it out. I'll keep you posted.

I have Twin Disc 514C transmissions , I just looked at my manual , I don’t think that there is any oil in the bell housing, therefore no gasket needed.

I have a hydraulic bottle jack I use for things like that, obviously put down a layer of plywood first. I removed the electrical end of one of my 20 KW Onans last year doing it this way. I made a small gantry with a pivot point on one end and the bottle jack on the other to control the height. .......Pat

Even though I have ZF’s and, therefore, dry connecting, I used gaskets. It doesn’t hurt metal to metal for a bit of a vibratory cushion.
