New head aft ?????

I am the process of replacing the original head at the aft stateroom--Has anyone done this w/ the new "Lectrascan" to eliminate going to the tank. My 71 43dc had this set-up originally .Sounds like they have been improved! What toilet system is the best?

The VacuFlush heads are best and I understand that there is a way to hook them up to Lectrasan units.

You will NOT find a consensus that VFs are the best and you will find a lot of opinion that they are needlessly complicated. Do plenty of research before you make this decision. Lot's of folks like them; lots of folks don't. The Raritan Atlantes is a popular choice as well.

Some folks, like me, prefer the oem GMs since they are, IMHO, essentially bulletproof!

That's Classic! I am going with the Atlantes for what it's worth. I like the idea of having everything contained within the unit and not having several different places for problems to develop.

I installed an Atlantes last year. WE love it. Both the normal flush and the mini flush fill our 60 gallon holding tank too quickly. I set ours up for a dry bowl, but have a vented loop if I ever want to set up for water remaining. There is still water in the bowl even though it is programmed for dry bowl. We flush with a combiation of momentary flush and dry bowl flush. No smell and I have to empty the holding tank once a week.

We have Vacuflush heads and a LectraSan. Water supply to the heads is potable and use about a pint of water per flush. We have a Hold-n-Treat system and the LectraSan batch-treats the waste as needed. Can't say that this system is any better than Atlantes or any other toilet but we love it. No more stench and no more pump outs. So far, the only con is that we have to use salt injection because of the freshwater flush. However, I believe we will spend less than $15 per year on salt.

For what it is worth, I am new to the boating industry and have a post going on while I rebuild a 34ft DC I pulled the lectra/san system off the boat last week, I know it has not run in over five years. I pulled the bolts, removed the top, no solids inside whatsoever. Flushed thuroughly and checked to see if all worked. Both motors turned the way they were supposed to and everthing else I could check seemed to be ok. I don't know about other systems,,,,but to me that tells me they are made pretty well. I will just reassemble and reinstall this week,,,,and will even hook up the other head to it as well as one system will handle two heads. You can also install a holding tank, for the occaision that some marinas forbid there use while docked. I have heard they post at the marinas if its not okay to use them.

I've come to the conclusion that a lectrasan or the GM waste treatment systems eliminate waste odor in the tanks. Our boat has a lec on the forward GM head and GM waste sytems on the other two and we have never had the slightest whiff of waste odor on our boat in the 5 years we have owned it.

I used to believe that it was primarly the fact that we used a lot of water in flushing, but now I have concluded that the waste systems are the real reason.

I came to this conclusion after it was necessary to pull the top off the lectrasan last season. I expected a really nasty smelling/looking, vomit-inducing effluent but what was there was a slightly cloudy, chlorine-smelling liquid. There was not a trace of a sewage or waste odor of any kind.
