  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
48' LRC (1976 - 1981)
Looking for recommendations on regular boat washing and an annual detailing of the exterior, from the rub rail up, on a 48 LRC. The dock makes any cosmetic maintenance of the hull impossible, other than a fresh water spraying. The boat is located about 5 miles south of New Bern on the Neuse River and about 25 miles by land inland from Morehead City. It will also have to be someone that covers themselves with liability and workman comp insurance (gated community requirement, a good one).

Anyone have a recommendation, especially from personal experience.

Thanks

Pete

The best surveyor in that area is Rob Eberly 252-670-1976 (I almost bought a Hatteras 60 in New Bern back in April) ....perhaps he would know a detailer to recommend...

Pete I used Jeremy Summerell from Tidewater marine to wash and detail my boat when we had it in New Bern. That was a few years ago so don't know if he still does. 252-637-3347 (w) or 617 2260 (m) are the last numbers I have. Worth a call. He traveled as far as Morehead to do it a few times when we moved down there.

We switched to Diane Pate eventually, who did a complete out of the water detail for us then maintained the interior, exterior and bottom(they have a diving operation too) for several years. Really great folks. I think they have some clients up here. 252-916-6338.

(from boater friend of mine who lives in New Bern) Terry Shea. She often works out of Duck Creek in Bridgeton, about 15 minutes from Fairfield Harbour. We use her often. If she can't do it because of insurance issues she will know who can.

FWIW, he says if it happens to be Fairfield Harbor, don't worry about the insurance thing, anyone could just smile and drive in there. Just wave. ;-)

And if none of the above works out, ask for Ed at West Marine in New Bern... he knows the scoop on all boating matters in that area !

Thanks to all for the leads. BTW, my State Farm home owners insurance, BoatUS vessel insurance, and my attorney strongly suggest not hiring someone to do work on my boat that is not covered by Workmans Comp. insurance. And the two insurance companies mentioned above do not offer coverage for an individual hired to work on a boat. Liability is also strongly suggested by all, but not mandatory like WC coverage. I would be totally exposed for a judgment against me personally if anything happened.

Interesting. Good points re ins/liab.

Do you require a certificate of insurance coverage before allowing them to start work? I can see that for major mechanical work, etc, so curious about cleaning companies, etc.

How else would you confirm 100% they have coverage and it is current at date of work?

The insurance company is contacted and send direct to you a copy of the coverage. This confirms the amounts and that the coverage is current.

Seems kinda lame that they don't.... but maybe mine (Falvey) doesn't either... I'll check !

Here's what he says... (on a Saturday !)

====================================================

There is no exclusion for contractors, as a general blanket. There is also an exclusion for any persons you employ who should be covered under a state act workers comp or federal USL&H or Jones act.

The primary exposure I could see is if they were injured & sued under Longshoreman & Harborworkers act (USL&H). For that reason, on all of our Falvey policies, we have a USL&H endorsement. Your's included. Most Marine Contractors could be considered USLH (If they move the boat potentially jones act); which is why we add this.

The exclusions noted above are standard in all policies, since no carrier is willing to pick up state act workers comp under a yacht policy

My rule of thumb, and this is not perfect, but it HELPS, is to never write a check to a PERSON if you are worried about insurance stuff. I guess every state is different, but most large companies require all vendors to prove workers comp coverage. This is because too many people have been bit in the ass by our society "not my fault" mentality.

Somebody gets hurt, and they claim it was working, and the state comes after you believing you were their EMPLOYER--even though you hired them as a contractor. If you hired an individual and write a check to their name, this line is very grey. If you write a check to an LLC, INC, biz, etc there is much more ammo to deal with the bureaucrats.

With that in mind that means any one who does any thing on the boat must be insured. If you are so worried let the attorney draw you a little note that does not hold you responsible for anyone hurt. . A fill in the blank deal generic so you can get it signed by everyone.
If you are looking a deal them do not look in the direction of fully insured and etc

If you want a dam good job and a so so price call Alex he lives about 20 min from Newbern his number is 252 622 2575 fyi on his van it says fully insured.

He has been working on my boat for about 3 years he has about 6 who work with him.
