  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
Hello all,
New owner of a '72 Hatteras 53MY purchased in March, 2016 & new member on here. I've been going through the forum and found you all have a great amount of experience & insight that has been extremely helpful as well as in time to come. My surveyor said if i purchased her 'No Regrets' that "I would have some uphill work" to do as she's a older vessel. It's going to be a lot more work & $ as we all know but she's a true classic that will be around longer than me! That's where I'm sure this forum will come in handy as we embark down this path. My wife & I look forward to hopefully meeting some Hatteras owners in the near future in person. Are home port is at Wild Dunes Yacht Harbor on Isle of Palms, South Carolina and look forward to some great coastal cruising and seeing you all out there!

Thanks and Cheers!
Jay & Pam Speer

Welcome to the Forum Jay and congratulations on No Regrets. We have a 1979 53 MY and have found it to be one of the best built boats we have owned. There will always be something to do considering her age but that's what keeps you young. The owners in this site are very helpful and generous. Most have experienced everything about their boats and can walk you thru your issues. Words of wisdom, when going thru your boat, do not through anything away unless you know exactly what it is and know you will never need it again. You may find things and ask yourself what the heck is this and toss it only to find the need for it a few months down the road and regret tossing it. Have fun, reach out if you need any help. SEVEN

PS post some photos.

Welcome, we just purchased a 1974 53 Motoryacht about 7 months ago and are well into a complete refit, the things that I learned from reading threads here have saved me hours and dollars, we love the boat and other people that see it are blown away by it, have fun, John

Welcome to the group! I second what Rusty says about not throwing anything away. My girlfriend or soon to be ex girlfriend decided she didn't like the look of the "old phones" on the boat and threw them away while I was out of town. These phones were the old communication links between the fly deck, the cockpit, galley and masters quarters. Unfortunately they can not be replaced, she can. Have fun with the boat! Its a money pit but well worth it :)

Ron, don't get rid of her as long as she can clean, wax and buff. LOL

Ron,

Spoken like a true enthusiast. Make sure her replacement can change oil, varnish, wax, paint and still
look good doing it. You can demand those things...after all you do own a Hatteras..... (lol)

LOL! Thanks all for the warm welcome! Will take advice on not tossing anything out. Guess that's why I kept my storage unit! I will post some pictures of her soon. Scarlett, good luck w/ refit. I have already ran into my Saloon A/C compressor shot (put a portable unit in saloon for now), bow A/C acting up. Just replaced my 32v Invertor/Charger along w/ all new batteries. Both PME & SME alternators failed & going to have them rebuilt. So as you all can tell I'm off to a great start!
As Ron said, money pit but well worth it.

Thanks again for everyone's welcome and most probably be calling on your expertise soon!

Jay
