My 53's stereo system is essentially oem with the addition of a pair of Poly-planars on the rear deck. All the speakers in the various locations function as per oem, with the volume control in the galley, master, and guest stateroom. They are powered by a standard stereo receiver - an NAD 7240 from around 1990.

I have a POWERED pair of Klipsch speakers which I want to add to the mix and I want them to operate as part of the regular system. Obviously, connecting the NAD's speaker cables to the powered speakers will result in WAAAAY too much signal being applied to the Klipsch. There must be some sort of device, or just some resistors(?) than can reduce the level appropriately but I don't seem to be able to find anything useful on the internet. Any ideas?

Disregard - found what I needed. I tried to delete the above post but couldn't...

I could just imagine ol' bubba forcing everyone onboard to listen to both kinds of music... country AND western from the central stereo unit that was OEM. I use tool pictures as #2 most frequently de-bubba-izing. Works for me! ws

Hey Mike...do post your solution.....I faced a similar issue several years ago...

I decided to keep the new speakers eparate so as to have more choices aboard....

"both kinds of music... country AND western "

Blues Brothers - great movie! As a former catholic school attendee I totally identified with Jake and Elwood getting smacked with the ruler! At age 7 I was hung up in the cloak room by my parka hood for being late. Messing with nuns was a losing proposition...:)

Mike~

Not sure about your Klipsch models, but with my powered Definitive's the internal amp is for the built in subwoofer/s...Many powered (active) home speakers are this way.

Do your Klipsch have only RCA connections, or both RCA & Speaker wire connections ?...They may also have volume controls to balance the sub mix.

If they have speaker wire connections then you should be ok connecting to them with speaker wire from the NAD, However to get the subwoofers to work properly you may need to also run a RCA cable to each Klipsch from the sub out of the NAD...

I might try to go the the Klipsch site & look up your models to be sure before you go to the expense of a converter.

Having an internal active sub connected properly can make all the difference in the world in bass response.

Steve: these are the speakers http://www.klipsch.com/na-en/products/promedia-2-1-overview/

The only input as supplied is a 1/8" stereo phone jack. There is no place to attach speaker wires from an amp. It's not a huge deal but I would like to be able to include them as one of the speaker sets. They have their own volume control so that's useful.

Actually, what might work is this: The NAD has preamp out phono plugs. they are routed from the back panel to the amp input phono plugs which are right next to them on the panel. SO...I could use a Y connector, running the premp out to the the base of the Y and then running one set to the klipsch and one back internally to the NAD. But I don't know what that added impedance load would do the the sound. Since none of this is all that good and I don't care about great sound on the boat, it might be fine. What do you think?

Ok...I see...They are computer speakers & the crossover to the satellites is done in the sub...

I take it the NAD has no other pre-outs besides the phono outs ?

If it's older, it may have tape outs which should work fine once converted with an adaptor...two female RCAs to a female 3.5 mm stereo mini from Radio Shack...Phono outs are different as there should be an internal pre-amp inside the NAD just for a turntable's requirements.

Some of the newer receivers don't have phono outs anymore (cost cut for the pre-amp)

Steve~

Yep, tape outs and a phone preamp (don't need that here but I still do Vinyl at home on occasion.)

So it sounds like with the adapter I could just use the tape outs as an input to the Klipsch and then they could play any source selected by the preamp if tape monitor was selected...
