  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
Calling the brain trust...

It looks like I am joining the insanity of buying a boat…

Or to rephrase; “I have found my new dream upon the Bay”- and I am planning on getting “hitched” ASAP to a 43 DCMY.

I need help in finding folks who can survey the boat and the Detroit’s that can cover the Tidewater VA area, preferably with some Hatteras experience.

Please give me some good names to contact… (Or note any that I should avoid).

I have not done this in a while, so information on what to expect would also be good…i.e. expectations on what it will cost, any other normal expected preparations, expenses, customs, etc. will also be helpful.

Boat is in good shape, runs well, has been cared for, and of course like all boats will be full of projects I am sure.

But the bones seem very solid and she feels very good (with zero “boat smell”), bilges so clean and dry you literally eat off them, and has some very nice upgrades.

I have been a mainly lurking forum member for years (soaking up info) and know this forum perhaps the greatest asset for anyone interested in a Hatteras.

Thanks in advance- all help appreciated.

Thanks SeaEric

I'll make a call tomorrow, any ideas for Detroit surveys?

Looked for Tom Hug(g?), Mr Power Specialists does not seem doing them...I did notice that Western Diesel now has a Tom Hug in their regional staff.

SeaEric the photos of your boat look great!

Hope to hear from everyone...I know that it will tough to get everyone and everything setup at the same time..."the season" will be demanding services.

thanks,

For an assessment of the Detroil diesel engines, I would highly recommend a Portsmouth, VA mechanic I've used several times for work on my 8v71s. Name is Dennis Quinn and his cell number is 757-681-3263. He's a former Western Branch Diesel mechanic.

Thanks DiverDown (Michael & Cindy)

Good info...

Mine will be 6V92's-

tight, but you can can get around them...any idea what I should expect in a price range for survey?

Thanks,

Dave

Tom Hug of MR Power still does surveys. I will be with him tomorrow for a sea trial. I don't know the guy with the same name in Va. but that has to be a coincidence. Tom will come to Va for an engine survey but this time of year is tough as he is very busy.

Thank you for the kind words about my old 41. She is a nice boat and I try hard to keep her up.

The pics and such look like you're surveying Fred's boat. Good for you. She is a very nice, very special 43. I'm pleased to know she's finding equally good new stewardship.

Tom Hug is a very good DD guy and really knows his stuff. I hired him last year for my survey, and was very impressed. As others have stated, he is very busy, but if you leave a message on his cell, he always calls back.

Hi Rich, I see you own Stars and Stripes. Nice boat. That was the last 39 SX. One of her previous owners now owns the very last 39 C ever built.

Aren't I just a wealth of useless trivia?

Hi Eric:

Thanks for the compliment. Yes I am now the owner of the Stars and Stripes, and I was aware of that factoid about the previous owner. Forgot who told me, but from what I understand it was about owning the "very last" of a paticular model.

The boat is now back in Virginia Beach after having a ton of work done in Solomons. Both people parked to either side of me, recognize the boat, and know the original owner, so the stories continue.

I just spent the last week working on misc items which needed to be addressed. Still have a list a mile long to go, but we are getting there.

Rich
