Just to clarify, the refresh rate is the time it takes the screen to update the vessel representation in relation to where it really is. My Raymarine is painfully slow (e7d), and my Northstar is not much better, but the Navionics phone app is slower that either one. I was using a Garmin 8215 a while back, and it's pretty fast.. And Garmin has discontinued it for and even faster model!

Don't know that it would matter, but are you using an iPhone or an iPad?

Operation on my iPhone has always been seamless. I hit "okay", hit the position button, and my boat pops up and I'm ready to go. That being said, are you hitting the position button to get the party started or waiting on the app to find itself?

The only dumb (irritating) thing mine has been doing lately is having me in the Gulf of Guinea when I start up the app. I have to power off the phone to reset things, then it's fine.

Isail is another app you might look at.

We've had it running on both. But for example you can relate to, couple of months ago, going down the Mobile ship channel, we ran the cut at the old light house for Bon Secor. The cut is very narrow, and channel dredge spoil is on both sided. The cuts not 100 yards wide and long. The iPad/iPhone Navionics app location trailed our actual location by several seconds and since we were going very slowly, it got confused as to the direction of travel. The Garmin 8215 was just about real time and spot on. The Navionics app is great, but IMHO, not a replacement for more robust instruments. I can Wifi my Raymarine Chartplotter to my iPad for a mobile display.

Not trying to be argumentative (I promise!), but I've just never had that happen with mine before. I wouldn't recommend it as a replacement for anything, but it makes a great backup and is totally capable of getting you from point A to point B.

Are you using an iPad with built in GPS chip or are you using an external blue tooth receiver? It shoudlnt matter but just curious

As mentioned earlier, I ve been relying on my iPad with build in GPS and garmin blue charts while in th bahamas No delay, no refresh issue, it is as precise as the furunos nav net. And some of the cuts are narrow with sharp turns once you re in. Timing is critical and the iPad is spot on.

The IPad has cellular network capability and built in GPS, the iPhone was an older one, like a 3 or 4, but I'm not an iPhone expert. I'm not anti Navionics app, it's great and cheap and wouldn't head out without it... As a back up. On the bridge, I've got my E7d, and in the pilot house Northstar 6000i. After running on a boat with the Garmin, and seeing how fast the map painted when you pinched it or expanded it, and seeing how close to real time the positioning was, that's my next upgrade.

The new 7600 series garmin is not only fast but smart. Ive installed a bunch since they were released in sizes from a 7" up to the 16". The all work the same with almost no difference except size.

PM me if you want to discuss the systems.

I'm using a 6s now but was using a 4s with Navionics before. No difference, but there may have been on a 3. Maybe that's where the difference is coming in.

I don't remember which series Northstar that Robby has on his boat, but it does some quirky things when changing ranges. Quirky as it losing every bit of detail at one range which is fairly close. It also showed the wrong color markers in the ICW coming in from East Pass where the iPhone had them right.
