Again I would be very leery of the injectors that came out. Even if you get exchange ones have them run in a tester where they can check spray pattern and flow. 99.999% of smoking problems are spray pattern and atomization. Typically the engine that clears up when it warms up is poorly atomized fuel that ends up burning when the cylinder gets hot enough to compensate.

I agree, I have always preached;
Find a good injector shop.
Rebuild-don't replace. If the shop you found can not do this, you did not find a good shop.
The shop will also Pop and match every injector.
Schedule minimum shelf time when the shop has completed their fine work.

Pending what was wrong with your original injectors, the cost of this path, is close to slightly more, than just replacing them from some patch shop in BFE.

In this thread, At least, insure the re-builders have all injectors popped and matched for their fresh engines. It will save them and you time in the long run.

About 15 years ago I made the mistake of letting Atlantic Detroit Diesel talk me into replacing all 6 injectors in my 6v92's after breaking a spring on one. I spent the next 4 seasons regularly replacing the Reliabuilt injectors that I used. And suffering with a smoky engine. I finally got a matched set of properly built injectors from Metro Fuel Injection in Deep River, CT based on the recommendation of Dan Pelloth, one of the top two old school DD guys in CT. My problems immediately cleared up and I stopped having to replace multiple injectors each season.

I just call Derek (avenger)

Magically I get what I need. No problems.

Are they still in business? I will get my injectors from there. I have heard nothing but bad things about the factory reliabilt injectors.

I don’t know the details, but note the previous comments about Avenger / Derek.

Definitely use Avenger/scrod. My daughter and SIL have a marine service co they buy their turbos and hard to find fuel system parts from him. If my guy in FtPierce closed up tomorrow I’d be sending my stuff to him.

this has me thinking, we have been chasing issues and seems they started at time our injectors were changed.
can someone identify these injectors?

scott,

Well yes, it's a GM 5670 injector.
Even Amazon has them to sell.

Sorry I had to do that.

Use your engine serial number to check for factory installed injectors. This is only 98.5% accurate but a good start.

The best way to ensure the quality of your injectors is to take them all to a quality shop, have them inspected and pop/matched.
Re-install with a complete cold tune up.

I guess I was looking for:

1) are these good injectors?
2) are these worth rebuilding
3) what brand would be the best to have?

Scott

1) Can not tell with out testing.
2) Yes
3) The OEM is the same. Brand packaging is by the vendors (new or rebuilt) not by the original (only?) MFG.

As some of us have been trying to say, keep and rebuild, pop and match your injectors at a real injector shop. Do not store, install the whole set into your engine with a fresh cold tune up.

Update: Engines are done. Like my experience with them on my last boat, the guys at J Diesel burned through the project pretty quickly, 2 months from start to finish. They did say if I was ever having problems like this with mechanics again they would make a special trip up here instead of having engine damage. He is giving me some grief over refusing to warranty the engines until the cutlass bearings are replaced since the shafts are too hard to turn. Also wants the starboard seacock replaced, it was frozen 3/4 open, which explains why that one always ran warmer than the other one on plane. So the boat is out of the water and getting that stuff done right now. After that on to sea trial and break in.

On the short trip from my dock to the other marina to get hauled out, I wasn’t expecting to notice anything but the difference was noticeable. They both start if you even look at the button now, no smoke. The throttle response is instant, it used to have to think about what you were asking it to do for a split second. The biggest difference is vibration and noise. The vibration they used to have when running is just plain gone, you could set a wine glass on top of the engine and it wouldn’t slosh now. They are quieter now with the engine access panels off than they were with them in place before. Not sure what that’s about, but a noticeable difference.

There were some add on items, the biggest one being a couple of the turbo housings were out of spec from wear / exhaust erosion so they put 4 new turbos on. That added $9k to the project. The exhaust blankets were original and began falling apart when moved, there were random things like that. These guys do pre and post rebuild seatrials, during the initial one he noticed my port transmission pressure was low and kept coming out of gear at higher throttle settings. He took it apart and somebody had replaced a line with teflon tape, and a piece of it broke loose and had partially clogged the little strainer tip in there. He installed external transmission oil filters, says the strainer tips clogging are a relatively common problem and that will stop it from happening again. All in all this appears to be heading for a landing right around the $70k mark.

I could not have repowered the boat for anything close to double that figure. I certainly couldn’t have had it done in this amount of time so that I still got to use it this summer. Based on that, I feel like I made the right choice. I am not expecting any real performance boost when it’s all done, my experience with detroits has been they will still give you the horsepower with everything in the world wrong with them they just behave badly around the dock. I hope to have it back by the weekend and be able to say for sure.

ETA: They did get a matched set of injectors from a custom shop that are within some small % spec of each other, I do appreciate the advice on that.

Glad to hear this. A repower might have been double what you've spent. You made the correct choice, IMHO.

Double for just the engines, not including the install. Have you seen the prices of things today?

It s insane

11 months ago we did an inframe on the port MTU 16V2000 on the 116 i run for $181k. We re about to rebuild starboard… same work, same guy… estimate is now $230k. 25% increase in under a year
