he said no, they all died

Maybe it's a regional thing? In Florida Detroits aren't a problem, the problem is finding reliable mechanics without drug problems that's the challenge. With most of my friend network, the experienced lifelong boaters tend to prefer Detroits because they're cheap reliable boating. My buddies who fish have all gone to engines with more power for the extra few knots, but everybody else still likes the DD's. I've never had trouble finding anybody to work on one in Florida.

Broker sent me a video earlier showing the boat cruising yesterday at 23 knots on the pins. Impressive to say the least.

What was less than impressive was finding out these 4,500 hour engines have NEVER had one single 1,000 hour service. Just oil and fluid changes. Not quite sure what to think of that given the owner has owned the boat for 20+ years. Guy is obviously not hurting for money and owns a 130’ish yacht and has been all over.

Broker says he is willing to pay for the 1,000 hour service which is almost 4,000 hours behind.

RUN FORREST, RUN!!!… or something else. Looking at boats in Key West next Saturday.

I'd figure the price of overhauls in anything that you might buy. Even with a decent engine survey, you just never know what might happen. And if this is going to be a business, you need to be able to fix the boat if something happens so you can get it back into service and making money again.

Yep on both counts. Down time is a killer when you’re chartering, not to mention living on the boat.

You wanna go hullspeed? Just rip out the euroJunkerz and put in some 500hp cummins.

That requires a “hole” lot of work on a motor yacht. Just saying.

It’s not like a convertible where the salon floor comes up and the boom comes it. Hull speed would be fine, but you would never recoup that particular investment.

The info I had on the 183's was all from sportfish guys that run their boats fast, it's a possibility that the 183's are okay for hull speed scenarios but I don't have any insight into that. Back when DD/MTU introduced the 183's they were getting their ass kicked by MAN in the sportfish market, my guess is they thought these would be popular because of the DD service network being much more robust than MAN's, issue was the product wasn't as good. Had a friend that ordered a 55 Viking with the MTU 183's because he hated the MANs in his current Viking, then he got an outboard.

Owner claims 90% hull speed. I keep getting different input on these things as I had someone else I know to be knowledgeable say they do better if you run them fast. With that, who knows?

I don’t, but I’m still hoping to get input on these engines never having had a 1,000 hour service with 4,500 hours on the clock. That sorta scares me a bit.

My guy with the 55 Viking had one blow up in Cancun and they had to bring it back to Palm Beach on 1 engine. He never had another ride, hello big outboards, think that was his 4th Viking in like 6 or 7 years too.

On one engine you say… :)
