  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
60' MOTOR YACHT (1987 - 1989)
So, I wonder…
If I put my 1983, series 1, 48’ MY on a transport from Encinada to Ft Liquordale, then motor on up, where along the Chesapeake might I want to stay for a year or so?
I may move (the household) permanently, and ponder living aboard for that year while searching for the ’right’ place. Annapolis has appeal, because I don’t know better?
Somewhere with a robust boating community, relatively less humidity?
A small town, close to a bigger one? I hit that retirement space, and do a little remote work, so quaint but not boring? I know nothing abt the East Coast.
What it typical berthing cost? What is the hurricane thing all about for insurance purposes? Do many move their boats north/south depending upon the weather?
Stupid questions? I figure if I can’t ask here, nowhere is safe!

I had considered doing something like that when I retired. I found it less expensive to sell my boat here and move there and buy a new one in the area. The East Coast has tens of thousands of boats compared to the San Francisco Bay area.

Definitely would make financial sense to sell it on the west coast and buy something else here.

Annapolis is interesting. Busy and tight.
St Michaels is much smaller and quieter.

All are humid in the summer.

If you living on your boat for a year, follow that 72 degrees.

Charleston, St Michaels, Newport/block on the hook, Maine and back.

We kept our boat at Kentmorr Marina just across the bridge from Annapolis. Small family run marina and shipyard. Great people decent marina with an on site Resturant in the summer. Check out MJ Sailing on You Tube they are building a catamaran in the yard there and have a lot of shots of the marina. Also the Kent Island Marinas are nice and have some covered slips. Sea Eric has his brokerage there.

On this, you should consult Sea Eric, who knows more about CB boating than anyone else here.

I have moved a couple boats the opposite direction after purchasing in FL because the selection and prices were better. Sold them in San Diego for more than I bought them for in FL after a few years of use. I think it depends on a few things to me. Do you love your boat? Is it the right size and model for what you want to do for the foreseeable future on the east coast? Are you interested in the adventure of cruising her to Ensenada and along the central CA coast, cruising the Channel Islands, etc? The cruise on the east coat from FL to mid Atlantic as well? What would it cost you to get the boat you wanted on the east coast and they fit her out to get her where you are now and right for the future?

This is how I would frame it. None of it makes sense to an accountant, but it has to make sense to you.

Why?
Brokerage fees to sell then buy would be $30k +/-
Transport cost is $35k
I’ve had the boat 15 years and know all the nooks and crannies and nuances of how she handles.
And, for those of us with the 48 MYs, they layout works really well.

Even with hundreds to pick from , those would not be Hatts…

What am I not budgeting?

There is a lot of great areas to choose from in the mid to upper bay. On the Western shore there is Herrington Harbor South or North, Annapolis, and the Middle River area. On the Eastern shore you have St Michaels, Oxford, Kent Island, Rock Hall, Tolchester, Fairlee Creek. The Eastern shore is slower paced compared to the Western shore where you would be closer to the cities. (Baltimore, Annapolis). We use our boat all 12 months of the year and visit all the areas I mentioned. There are also a number of Yacht clubs in these areas that you could use to your advantage and move around the different areas fairly inexpensively if you are a Yacht club member at another club. Just a thought to find what's right for you.

I would never keep a boat in Middle River area again. We kept ours there for awhile while we returned to San Diego. They have this stupid law that says there is no speed limit during the week even up little creeks that are full of marinas, and people are to stupid to realize what there wakes are doing to boats tied up in a marina. It was a cheap place to keep a boat if you don’t mind having to repair the damage caused but boat wakes.

There’s nowhere on the entire Eastern Seaboard that doesn’t have high humidity and crazy hight temperatures in the summer. It’s regularly 105 degrees on Long Island Sound in the summer, which will also coincide with no breezes at all. The ONLY reason California is as popular as it is-is because of the lack of humidity. We get Gulfstream flowing north, you get Alaska current flowing south.

Actually, we're having great weather right now with breezes, low humidity and moderate temps. This season will last until tomorrow, when it will become much less enjoyable around here.

Because Summer started today? Lol.

Yeah, first day of summer, 65 degrees, damp, cool, and windy with 35 knot gusts expected later today. Real summer weather.

We are looking at going the other way. I had a quote to truck my 42 LRC from the Great Lakes to Washington for around $26k. Not sure if this is of any help.
An option for relatively inexpensive storage north of Fort Lauderdale would be Indiantown Marina just inside of Stuart.
We are looking to do a boat swap/transfer, but I am lookiing in the PNW.

Good luck
